Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "And had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter" [Surah An-Nur: 14]: meaning had Allah not shown you kindness and concealed your faults, "you would have been touched, because of what you indulged in": meaning because of this lie, "by a great punishment" [Surah An-Nur: 14]: meaning a punishment that would never cease.

Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said in explaining this saying of Allah Almighty: "And had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter" [Surah An-Nur: 14] — there is a transposition (of word order) in it; the meaning is: "Had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, there would have touched you" [Surah An-Nur: 14], meaning punishment would have befallen you, "for what you indulged in" [Surah An-Nur: 14], meaning in the slander you fabricated, "a great punishment" [Surah An-Nur: 14], meaning the penalty of this world and the Hereafter would have reached you.

Qatadah said concerning this verse: "And had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been touched by a great punishment because of what you indulged in": This is about the affair of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and what was said; the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were close to being destroyed by it.
