Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates that when Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was accused, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the affair of Sayyidah Aishah: "What do you say?" He said: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! It is not permissible for us to speak of this; Glory be to You! This is a tremendous slander.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Why, when you heard it" [Surah An-Nur: 12], meaning did you not hear it? "Did you say: It is not for us to speak of this; Glory be to You! This is a tremendous slander" [Surah An-Nur: 16]; "slander" means a tremendous false accusation, as Allah said about Sayyidah Maryam: "And for their saying against Maryam a tremendous slander" [Surah An-Nisa: 156].

Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "Why, when you heard it" [Surah An-Nur: 12], meaning the accusation, why did "you not say: It is not for us" [Surah An-Nur: 16], meaning it is not fitting for us, "to speak of this" [Surah An-Nur: 16], meaning the accusation, when our eyes have seen nothing; "Glory be to You" [Surah An-Nur: 12], meaning why did you not say: Glory be to You! "This is a tremendous slander" [Surah An-Nur: 16], meaning why did you not say what Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said? For when Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) heard what was said about Sayyidah Aishah, he said: Glory be to You! This is a tremendous slander. And slander is when a person fabricates a lie against someone and says what never happened.
