Qatadah bin Di'amah narrated: Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Utbah bin Abi Lahab. When Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, revealed the verse: "The two hands of Abu Lahab have perished" [Surah al-Masad: 1], the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) demanded that Utbah divorce Sayyidah Ruqayyah, and Sayyidah Ruqayyah herself also demanded it, so he divorced her. Then Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) married Sayyidah Ruqayyah, and she died while married to him.

Zubayr bin Bakkar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyidah Ruqayyah bint Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) was married to Utbah bin Abi Lahab, and he left her. Then Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) married Sayyidah Ruqayyah in Makkah, and she emigrated with him to the land of Abyssinia. She bore him Abdullah, after whom he was given his kunyah. She came with him to Madinah, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), with the permission of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), stayed behind from Badr to nurse her, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted him a share among the shares of the people of Badr. He said: And will I have the reward too, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, you will have the reward too."
