Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one night on a journey, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have any water?" I said: "Yes." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his mount and walked until he disappeared from me in the darkness of the night. Then he came back, and I poured water for him from the vessel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his hands and his face. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a woollen cloak, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) could not bring his forearms out because of its tightness, so he brought them out from beneath the cloak. Then he washed his forearms and wiped his head. Then I reached down to remove his leather socks, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave them, for I put them on in a state of purity." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks.

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and said: "Is there any water for purification?" So I brought him water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his hands and his face, then he went to wash his forearms but the cloak was tight - it was one of the Roman cloaks - so he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands out from beneath the cloak and washed his forearms. Then I reached for the leather socks, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave the leather socks, for I put my feet into the leather socks while they were pure." Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were on a journey, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Do you have any water?" I said: "Yes." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his mount, then walked on until he disappeared from me. When he came back, I met him with the vessel for ablution. He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution: he washed his hands and washed his face. Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One night I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who is this?" I said: "I am al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop." So I held his she-camel for him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) went off until he was out of sight. Then he came back and I helped him (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution. He (peace and blessings be upon him) uncovered his forearms, but the sleeve of the cloak was tight, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands out from beneath it. Then he performed ablution, washing his hands, his face and his forearms, and wiped over his leather socks. I said: "Will you not remove your leather socks?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I put them on in a state of purity."

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tapped my back lightly with a stick he (peace and blessings be upon him) had with him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned aside and I turned aside too, until we reached a place - I do not remember which part of the land. He (peace and blessings be upon him) made his mount kneel and dismounted, then walked off until he disappeared from me. Then he came back and said: "Do you have any water?" I had a leather water-skin with me, so I poured water from it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his hands and his face, then went to wash his forearms. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Syrian cloak with tight sleeves, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands out from beneath the garment, washed his hands and his face, washed his forearms and wiped - Ibn Awn said: He also mentioned something about his forelock and his turban, and I am not sure whether I remembered it correctly or not - and wiped over his leather socks. Then he said: "If you need anything, tell me." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I do not need anything." Then we went on and reached the people, and found Ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) leading them in the Fajr prayer; he had already led them in one rak'ah. I went to inform him, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped me. So we prayed the rak'ah we caught, and completed afterwards what we had missed.
