Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The first to give the pledge to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of al-Aqabah was Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Between us and the people there are ropes (by ropes is meant covenants and pacts); perhaps we will cut them, and then you will return to your people after we have broken the covenants and waged war against the people for your sake. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed at his words and said: "(My) blood is (your) blood, (my) ruin is (your) ruin." When Abu al-Haytham was satisfied with what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said in reply to him, he turned to his people and said: O my people! This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); I bear witness that he is truthful. Today he is within the sanctity and security of Allah, among his own people and clan. So know that if you take him out (from here), all the Arabs will fall upon you as though from a single bow. If your hearts are content to fight in the path of Allah and to lose wealth and children, then invite him to your land, for he is truly the Messenger of Allah; but if you fear that you will abandon him, then (decline) from now. Abdullah said: We have accepted what has been given to us from Allah and His Messenger, and we have given you ourselves, as you asked of us, O Messenger of Allah! So, O Abu al-Haytham, step aside from between us and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that we may give him (peace and blessings be upon him) the pledge. Abu al-Haytham said: I am the first to give the pledge. Then all of them gave the pledge. Meanwhile, Satan cried out from the top of the mountain and said: O people of Quraysh! These are the Khazraj and the Aws making a pact with Muhammad to fight against you. At that they became alarmed and frightened, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let this voice not frighten you, for it is only the enemy of Allah, Iblis; none of those whom you fear can hear it." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, called out to Satan and said: "O son of Azabb! This is your doing; soon I will deal with you."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One night I missed the Isha (prayer), and I kept tossing and turning; sleep would not come to me. I thought: Why should I not go out to the mosque and pray whatever is possible for me? So I did that, then I sat leaning against a corner of the mosque. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came in; when he saw me he did not recognise me and said: Who is this? I said: Abu Bakr. He said: What brought you out at this hour? I said: Hunger. He said: And nothing brought me out except what brought you out. Only a little while had passed when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came (there). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw our dark shapes, he did not recognise them and said: "Who are these two?" Umar answered before me and said: This is Abu Bakr and this is Umar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What brought the two of you out at this hour?" We told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole matter, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And nothing brought me out except what brought the two of you out. Come with us to the house of al-Waqimi." We reached the door and asked permission, and a woman came out. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is so-and-so?" She said: He has gone to fetch sweet water for us from the garden of Banu Harithah. She opened the door and we went in. Only a little while had passed when he came carrying a waterskin on his back, until he hung it on the stump of a branch of a date palm. Then he turned to us and said: Welcome! No one has ever been visited by better guests than those who have visited me tonight. Then he brought a bunch of half-ripe dates, and we began picking them out in the moonlight and eating. Then he took a knife and went among the goats, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Beware of the milking one," or he said: "the one with milk." So he slaughtered a goat for us, skinned it, cut it into pieces and put it in the pot, and he instructed the woman, so she kneaded dough and baked bread. Then he brought us tharid and meat, and we ate. Then he got up and went to the waterskin, which the wind had swayed and cooled, and gave us to drink from it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Praise be to Allah! Nothing brought us out except hunger, and then we did not return until we received this blessing. This is part of the blessings about which you will be asked on the Day of Resurrection." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to al-Waqimi: "Do you not have a servant who can do this work for you?" He said: No, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the first captives come to me, come to me, and I will have a servant given to you." Not long afterwards captives came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he came to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What has brought you?" He said: The promise that you made to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up and choose from among them." He said: O Messenger of Allah! You choose for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this boy, and treat him well." He went to his wife and told her what he had said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and what he (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to him. She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered you to treat him well, so treat him well. He said: What is treating him well? She said: That you free him. He said: He is free for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out at midday and found Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What has brought you out at this hour?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! The same thing that brought you out has brought me out. Then Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Ibn al-Khattab! What has brought you out?" He said: The same thing that brought the two of you out has brought me out. So Umar sat down, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began talking with the two of them. Then he said: "Do the two of you have the strength to go to this palm grove and find there some food, something to drink and a beverage?" We said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then come with us to the house of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan al-Ansari." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went ahead of us, gave the greeting of peace and asked permission three times. Umm al-Haytham was listening to his (peace and blessings be upon him) greeting from behind the door, wishing that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would greet more. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to turn back, Umm al-Haytham came running out after them and said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I heard your greeting, but I wanted you to give us more of your greeting. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for good for her, then said: "Where is Abu al-Haytham?" She said: O Messenger of Allah! He is nearby; he has gone to fetch sweet water for us. Please come in; he will come shortly, in sha' Allah. So she spread a mat for them under the tree, and Abu al-Haytham came. He was overjoyed to see them (the guests), and his eyes were delighted. He climbed a date palm and cut bunches of dates for them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Haytham! Hope for the reward (of this)." He said: O Messenger of Allah! Eat from all its kinds, the unripe, the ripe and the half-ripe. Then he brought them water and they drank, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is part of the blessings about which you will be questioned." Then Abu al-Haytham got up to slaughter a goat for them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Beware of the milking one." Umm al-Haytham began kneading dough and baking bread for them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) laid down their heads for the midday nap. When they were woken, their food was ready. The food was placed before them, and they ate until they were full. Abu al-Haytham also brought them the remaining bunches, and they ate of its fresh and half-ripe dates. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with peace and prayed for good for them.

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out at a time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not usually come out. Then Abu Bakr came out, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu Bakr! What has brought you out?" He said: Hunger has brought me out. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And the same thing that brought you out has brought me out." Then Umar came out, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Umar! What has brought you out?" He said: By the One who sent you with the truth, hunger has brought me out. Then some of his Companions came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Come with us to the house of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan." So they set off. When they reached the house of Abu al-Haytham, his wife said: Abu al-Haytham has gone to fetch sweet water for us; come round to the garden. She opened the gate of the garden for them and they sat down. Then Abu al-Haytham came, and his wife said to him: Do you know who is with you? He said: No. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions are with you. So he came in, tied his horse to the trunk of a date palm, then came to them, greeted them with peace and welcomed them. Then he went to his fruit-picking implement, came to a bunch of dates and picked fresh dates for them, and he poured them out before them. Then Abu al-Haytham turned towards his goats in a corner of the garden to slaughter one of them for them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Not one that gives milk." So he took a goat, slaughtered it, skinned it, cut it up into joints and cooked it in water and salt. Then he went to his wife and asked: Do you have anything? She said: Yes, we have a little barley which we had been keeping aside. So the two of them ground it together, then she kneaded it and baked it. Abu al-Haytham broke it up and poured over it the meat he had cooked, then brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, and they ate. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Haytham! Do you not have a servant?" He said: No, by the One who sent you with the truth, we have no servant. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hear that captives have come to us, come to us and we will give you a servant." Then captives came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Abu al-Haytham came. Before him (peace and blessings be upon him) were two slave boys, or he said: two young servants. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Haytham! Choose one of the two," or he said: "Take your pick of the two." Abu al-Haytham said: O Messenger of Allah! You choose for me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked carefully, even rolling up his sleeves from his forearms, and said: "The one whose counsel is sought is entrusted. O Abu al-Haytham! Take this one." When Abu al-Haytham was leaving with him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Haytham! Treat him well, for I have seen him praying." Abu al-Haytham said: Yes, we will feed him from what we eat and clothe him from what we wear, and we will not burden him with work beyond his strength. So Abu al-Haytham went to his family, and they were overjoyed with him and said: Praise be to Allah who has granted us a servant to serve us and help us with our farming. Abu al-Haytham said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given me an instruction concerning him. His wife said: Yes, we will feed him from what we eat and clothe him from what we wear, and we will not burden him with work beyond his strength. Abu al-Haytham said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given me an instruction concerning him. His wife said: Subhan Allah! A servant whom Allah and His Messenger have given us for our service, and you want to deprive us of him? So Abu al-Haytham said to the slave: You are free for the sake of Allah. If you would like to stay with us, we will feed you from what we eat and clothe you from what we wear and will not burden you with work beyond your strength; and if you wish, go wherever you wish.

Abd al-Malik bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out at a time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not usually come out and when no one would meet him. Abu Bakr came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! What has brought you out?" He said: I came out to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to look at his face and to greet him with peace. Only a little while had passed when Umar came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! What has brought you out?" He said: Hunger. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I too have felt something of what you feel. Come with us to Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan al-Ansari." He owned many horses and goats but had no servant. They came to him but did not find him; instead they found his wife, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is your companion?" She said: He went early this morning to fetch sweet water from the channel of such-and-such tribe. Only a little while had passed when he came with a water-skin and put it down. Then he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), embraced him (peace and blessings be upon him) and began saying that his father and mother be ransomed for him. Then he took them to the shade of his garden and spread a mat for them. Then he went to a date palm and brought a bunch of dates, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not pick out its fresh dates for us?" He said: I wanted you to taste both kinds, its fresh and its half-ripe dates. So they ate and drank from that water. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, this is part of the blessings about which you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection: this cool shade, fresh dates and cool water." Go and prepare some food for them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not slaughter one that gives milk." So he slaughtered for them a young she-goat or a kid, then brought it to them and they ate. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Do you have a servant?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When captives come to us, come to us." Then two heads (slaves) were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with no third besides them, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Choose between the two." He said: O Messenger of Allah! You choose for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one whose counsel is sought is entrusted. Take this one, for I have seen him praying, and accept my counsel to treat him kindly." He came to his wife and told her what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. She said: There is nothing better for fulfilling what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said than freeing him. He said: Then he is free. Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman said: "Only the one who did not mention the name of Allah at its beginning and did not praise Allah at its end will be questioned about it (the blessing). As for the one who said (Bismillah) at the beginning and (Alhamdulillah) at the end, he has fulfilled its thanks."

Yazid bin Kaysan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and met Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What has brought the two of you out of your houses?" They both said: Hunger. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, the same thing that brought the two of you out has brought me out. Come." So they went with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and came to a man of the Ansar. The Ansari was not there, but his wife was, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Where is so-and-so?" She said: He has gone to fetch sweet water for us. While they were in this state, the Ansari arrived carrying a water-skin. When he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his two companions, he said: Allahu Akbar! No one has guests more honoured than my guests. Then he hung up the water-skin and cut a bunch of dates for them containing unripe, fresh ripe and dried dates. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Why did you not pick them out?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! Choose for yourselves with your own eyes. Then he took hold of the knife, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Beware of the milking one." So he slaughtered (a goat) for them and they ate. When they had finished, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "You will certainly be questioned about this blessing on the Day of Resurrection. Hunger brought you out of your houses, and then you did not return until you had obtained this blessing."
