In those days the mosque was among the date-sellers (market). We entered (the mosque), and there was a man from the tribe of Qays called Ibn al-Muntafiq. I heard him saying: The qualities of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were described to me and his (peace and blessings be upon him) appearance was made clear to me, so I sought him (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah, and I was told that he was in Mina. Then I sought him (peace and blessings be upon him) in Mina and was told that he was at Arafat. Then I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was among a riding party of his Companions, and I was told: Move out of the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave the man; what does he need?" So I drew near until I took hold of the nose-rein or the halter of his (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! I ask you about what will save me from the Fire and bring me to Paradise. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards the sky, then lowered it, then turned his face towards me and said: "Although you have kept your question brief, you have asked about something great and lengthy, so remember this from me: Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, pay the obligatory zakah, fast Ramadan, and whatever you would love people to do to you, do it to them, and whatever you dislike people doing to you, leave people alone from it. Let the she-camel, or the mount, go on its way." Hammam (the narrator) said: As for Hajj, he was in fact performing Hajj at the time he asked him (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu al-Muntafiq said: I came to Makkah and asked about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people said: (He (peace and blessings be upon him) is) at Arafah. So I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and began drawing near until the neck of my mount went past the neck of his (peace and blessings be upon him) mount, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me what will save me from the punishment of Allah and admit me into His Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, pay the obligatory zakah, and perform Hajj and Umrah," and I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Fast Ramadan, and see what you would love people to do to you and do it to them, and what you dislike them doing to you, leave them alone from it." Al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn Awn became confused in the chain of this hadith and did not preserve it accurately from Muhammad bin Juhadah, whereas Hammam preserved it accurately.

It is narrated from Asim bin Laqit that Sayyiduna Laqit bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) set out as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him was a companion of his called Nahik bin Asim bin Malik bin al-Muntafiq. Laqit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He set out, and my companion and I set out too, until we reached Madinah at the end of Rajab. Listen, I have kept my voice in reserve for you for four days so that I might make you hear today. Listen, is there any man whose people have sent him?" The people said: Shall it be made known to us what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying? "Listen! Then perhaps his own thoughts or the talk of a companion of his may distract him, or misguiding things may distract him. Listen! I will be asked whether I conveyed (the message). Listen! Hear so that you may live. Listen! Hear so that you may live. Listen! Sit down." He said: So the people sat down, and my companion and I stood, until, when his (peace and blessings be upon him) heart and sight turned towards us, I said: O Messenger of Allah! What knowledge of the unseen do you have? He (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed — by Allah — and shook his head, and he knew that I wanted to make him slip, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your Lord has kept five matters of the unseen to Himself, which none knows but He," and he gestured with his hand. I said: What are they, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The knowledge of death: when the death of any of you will come — you do not know it. And the knowledge of the sperm-drop: when it is in the womb, Allah knows it and you do not know it. And the knowledge of tomorrow: Allah knows what you will eat tomorrow, and you do not know it. And the knowledge of the Day of Resurrection: it will come upon you while you are in hardship and afraid, and your Lord will keep laughing, for He knows that your return is near." Laqit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: We will never be deprived of good from a Lord who laughs. "And the knowledge of the Hour."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am going to ask you about my need, so do not hurry me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask whatever you wish." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach us what people know and what we know, for we are from a tribe whose word is not believed — neither by Madhhij, who hold superiority over us, nor by Khath'am, who are our equals and our allies, nor even by our own clan. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will remain for as long as you remain, then the Blast will be sent. By your God, it will not leave anything upon the surface of the earth except that it dies, and also the angels who are with your Lord. And your Lord will go about in the earth, and the lands will lie empty before Him. Then your Lord will send the sky with rain from the direction of the Throne, and by your God, it will not leave upon the surface of the earth any slain person or buried dead except that his grave will be split open for him, and He will create him from the direction of his head until he sits up. Your Lord will say: What is the matter? He will say: O my Lord, (it was) yesterday — because he will remember his last sense of life, he will think it was just now."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! When the winds, decay and wild beasts have torn us to pieces, how will He gather us again? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will tell you of a similar example among the signs of Allah: the earth, which you see dry and barren, and you say it will never come to life; then your Lord sends the sky upon it, and after only a little while you see it, and it has become green and lush in a single bloom. So by your God, He is more able to gather you from the water than He is to gather the vegetation of the earth. So you will come out from the lights and from the places where you fell, and you will look at Him for a moment and He will look at you."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! How will that be, when we will fill the earth and He is a single Being; He will see us and we will see Him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will tell you of another similar example among the signs of Allah: the sun and the moon are a small sign of His; you see them at one and the same time and they see you, and you feel no crowding in seeing them. So by your God, He is more able to have you see Him and to see you than (it is for) you to see the sun and the moon and for them to see you."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! What will our Lord do with us when we meet Him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will be presented before Him with your faces exposed; nothing about you will be hidden from Him. Then your Lord will take a handful of water in His hand and sprinkle it before you, and by your God, not a single drop will miss the face of any one of you. As for the one who is a Muslim, his face will become bright like a white cloth, and as for the one who is a disbeliever, his face will become black like black charcoal. Listen! Then He will turn away from you, and the righteous will follow behind Him and cross a bridge that will be over the Fire. One of you will step on a burning coal and say: Ouch! And your Lord will say: Now is its time. Listen! Then they will arrive, limping, at the Pool of the Messenger; by Allah, those who drink from it will never feel thirst again. So by your God, none of you will stretch out his hand except that a cup will fall into it, purifying him from excrement, urine and filth. And the sun and the moon will be withheld, so you will not see either of them."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! Then by what will we see? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Just as you are seeing right now at this time, and that will be with the rising of the sun on a day when the earth is lit up and the mountains face it."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! How will we be recompensed for our bad deeds and our good deeds? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A good deed will be rewarded tenfold, and a bad deed will be recompensed with its like, or it will be forgiven."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! What are Paradise and Hell? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By your God, Hell has seven gates; between every two of its gates is a distance a rider would cover in seventy years. And Paradise has eight gates; between every two of its gates is the same distance, which a rider would cover in seventy years."
I said: O Messenger of Allah! Upon what will we look out in Paradise? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Upon rivers of pure, clear honey, and rivers of wine that cause neither headache nor regret, and rivers of milk whose taste does not change, and rivers of clear water, and fruits — by your God, of which you have no knowledge — and other excellent things like them, and purified spouses." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will there be wives for us there, or will righteous ones among them be given to us? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Righteous women will be for righteous men. You will take pleasure in them just as you took pleasure in the world, and they will take pleasure in you, except that there will be no offspring there." Laqit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: What could be better than this, which we are going to reach.
I said: O Messenger of Allah! On what shall I give you my pledge? He (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his hand and said: "On establishing the prayer, giving zakah, and keeping away from polytheism — that you do not take any god besides Allah." He said: I said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Then what is the ruling between the east and the west? He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) closed and opened his fingers, thinking that I wanted to make a condition he would not grant me. He said: I said: That we may camp in it wherever we wish, and that no one bears a burden except upon himself. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his hand and said: "That is yours: camp wherever you wish, and no one but yourself will put a burden upon you." He said: Then we took leave of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These two, these two are from a people who — by your God — are among the people who most fear their Lord in this world and the Hereafter." Then Ka'b bin al-Khudariyyah, one of Banu Abi Bakr bin Kilab, said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Who are they, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Banu al-Muntafiq." He said: Banu al-Muntafiq are indeed worthy of that, they are worthy of that. Then I turned back and, facing him (peace and blessings be upon him), said: O Messenger of Allah! Did any of those who passed away before us have any good in their Jahiliyyah? A man from the common people of Quraysh said: By Allah, your father al-Muntafiq is in the Fire. He said: It was as if heat spread between the skin and the flesh of my face because of what he said in front of all the people, and I wanted to say: O Messenger of Allah! Where is your father? But the other (way of putting it) seemed better, so I said: Or your family, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My family too. Whenever you pass by the grave of a polytheist from Amir or Quraysh, say: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me to you, so receive the news of what will grieve you — you will be dragged on your face and belly in the Fire." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Why was that done to them, when they were following a practice beyond which they knew nothing good, and they considered themselves righteous? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is because Allah sent a prophet at the end of every seven nations; whoever obeyed his prophet was among the rightly guided, and whoever disobeyed him was among the misguided."
