Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were seven men, three Arabs and four of our mawali (freed slaves and clients). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out from one of his apartments to us and sat with us, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What has made you sit here?" We said: "We are waiting for the prayer." He (peace and blessings be upon him) began to scratch the ground with his fingers, then kept his head lowered for a while, then raised his head towards us and said: "Do you know what your Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, says?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He says: Whoever prays the prayers at their times and upholds their limits will have a covenant that I will admit him to Paradise. And whoever does not pray the prayers at their times and does not uphold their limits will have no covenant with Me; if I wish I will admit him to the Fire, and if I wish I will admit him to Paradise."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the pulpit one day. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed one step (of the pulpit), he said: "Amin." Then he climbed the second step and said: "Amin." Then he climbed the third step and said: "Amin." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and had finished (the sermon), we said: "O Messenger of Allah, today we heard something from you that we had never heard before?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you hear it?" They (the Companions) said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) appeared before me when I climbed the first step and said: 'May he be far (from mercy) who finds his parents, or one of them, in old age and they do not cause him to enter Paradise.' I said: 'Amin.' Then he said: 'May he be far (from mercy) before whom I am mentioned and he does not send blessings upon you.' So I said: 'Amin.' Then he said: 'May he be far (from mercy) who reaches Ramadan and is not forgiven.' So I said: 'Amin.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a military expedition and said: "If Allah keeps them safe, I will certainly give Him thanks," or he said: "It is upon me, if Allah keeps them safe, to give Him thanks." So they took spoils and returned safely, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Allahumma laka al-hamdu shukran, wa laka al-mannu fadlan' (O Allah, to You belongs praise with thanks, and from Your grace alone is this favour)." The people waited for him to do something (special by way of thanks), but they did not see him do anything, so they said: "O Messenger of Allah, you had said what you said?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did I not say: 'O Allah, to You belongs praise with thanks, and from Your grace alone is this favour'?"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "After me there will be rulers" and he (peace and blessings be upon him) described them as oppressive "whoever goes in to them, affirms their lies and helps them in their wickedness, he is not from me and I am not from him, and he will never come to me at the Pond. And whoever does not affirm their lies and does not help them in their wickedness, he is from me and I am from him, and he will come to me at the Pond. O Ka'b bin Ujrah, flesh that has grown from unlawful earnings deserves not to enter Paradise; the Fire is more fitting for it, and the Fire has more right to it."

"O Ka'b bin Ujrah, prayer is a proof, fasting is a shield, and charity extinguishes the anger of the Lord just as water extinguishes fire."
"O Ka'b bin Ujrah, seek refuge from the rule of fools." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the rule of fools? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be rulers who, when they speak, lie, and who act and know (what they are doing). So whoever comes to them, affirms their lies and helps them in their oppression, he is not from me and I am not from him, and he will not come to the Pond. And whoever does not come to them, does not affirm their lies and does not help them in their oppression, he is from me and I am from him, and he will come to the Pond."

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man with his face covered passed by us, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be division and discord among the people, and this man and his companions will be upon the truth." Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I caught up with him and looked at him closely until I recognised him. We used to ask Ka'b: Who was that man? But he would refuse to tell us, until Ka'b went with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to Kufah and remained there until he died; so it was as if we came to know that the man was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
