Hayyaj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A slave of his father had run away, so his father vowed that if he got hold of him he would cut off a part of him. When he got hold of him, he sent me to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and I asked him. Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Tell your father to free his slave or to make expiation for his oath, "for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to urge us to give charity and forbid us from mutilation." Then I went to Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him, and he too said the same as Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him). This is how Ma'mar, Hammam and Qatadah narrated it from al-Hasan, from Hayyaj, "whereas Sa'id bin Abi Arubah and Hammam bin Yahya differed from him."

The narrator said: Hayyaj bin Imran (may Allah have mercy on him) came to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). His father had said about a slave of his: He has run away; if I get hold of him I will cut off a part of him, or his hand. Then he got hold of him. So Hayyaj went to Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about it, and told him what his father had said. Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Tell your father to make expiation for his oath or to free his slave, and not to cut off any part of him, "for the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to urge charity in his sermons and forbid mutilation." Then he related that he went to Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too said the same as Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Hayyaj bin Imran al-Burjumi (may Allah have mercy on him) that a slave of his father had run away, so he vowed to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that if he got hold of him he would cut off his hand. When he came to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Tell your father not to do so, "for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) urging charity in his sermons and forbidding mutilation." Tell your father to make expiation for his oath and to overlook the fault of his slave.
