Hayyaj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A slave of his father had run away, so his father vowed that if he got hold of him he would cut off a part of him. When he got hold of him, he sent me to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and I asked him. Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Tell your father to free his slave or to make expiation for his oath, "for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to urge us to give charity and forbid us from mutilation." Then I went to Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him, and he too said the same as Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him). This is how Ma'mar, Hammam and Qatadah narrated it from al-Hasan, from Hayyaj, "whereas Sa'id bin Abi Arubah and Hammam bin Yahya differed from him."
