Abd al-Majid bin Abi Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In the time of Yazid bin al-Muhallab, Yahya bin Abi Nasr and I set out for Makkah, and we passed by a watering place called 'al-Tarhih'. The people there said to us: Here is a man who saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So we came to a very old man and asked: Did you see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote (a deed) for me concerning this very water. And he brought out for us a piece of leather on which was the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We asked: What is your name? He said: Al-Adda' bin Khalid. We asked: What did you hear from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I was beneath his she-camel on the day of Arafah while she was chewing the cud, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, what day is this? And what month is this? And what city is this?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is this not a sacred month, a sacred city and a sacred day?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! Your blood, your wealth and your honour are sacred to you, just as this day of yours is sacred, in this month of yours, in this city of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. O Allah, have I conveyed? O Allah, bear witness."

Sayyiduna al-Adda' bin Khalid bin Hawdhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I not read to you a document that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had written for me? We said: Certainly. In it was written: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is what al-Adda' bin Khalid bin Hawdhah bought from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He bought from him (peace and blessings be upon him) a male slave, or a female slave (Uthman was in doubt), as the sale of a Muslim, with no defect, no deception and no foulness." Al-Asma'i said: I asked Sa'id bin Abi Arubah about 'gha'ilah' and he said: Running away, theft and zina. And I asked him about 'khibthah', and he said: The (unlawful) selling of people under covenant with the Muslims.

Shu'ayb bin Umar related: I set out for Makkah, and when I reached al-Dariyyah one of my companions said to me: Would you be interested in a man who had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? I said: Yes. He said: It is the owner of the tent pitched at such-and-such a place. I said to my companions: Let us go to him. So we went, and when we reached the owner of the tent we greeted him with salam. He returned the greeting and asked: Who are you people? We said: Some people from Basrah; we have learnt that you had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, I kept the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I sat beneath his pulpit on the day of the Farewell Hajj. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'O people, We created you from a male and a female and made you nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honoured of you with Allah is the most God-fearing of you' [al-Hujurat: 13]. So no Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a black person over a white person, nor a white person over a black person, except through taqwa (God-consciousness). O people of Quraysh, do not come to me carrying this world on your necks while the people come with the Hereafter, for on that day I will not be able to avail you anything against Allah." We asked: By what name shall we call you; what is your name? He said: I am al-Adda' bin Amr bin Amir; in the Jahiliyyah I was called 'the horseman of al-Dahya''.

Sayyiduna al-Adda' bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Hour will not be established until a man greets with salam only those he knows, until the mosques are taken as thoroughfares, until a woman and her husband trade together, and until women and horses become cheap and do not become expensive again until the Day of Resurrection."

Shu'ayb bin Amr related: We performed Hajj and passed along the road of al-Munkadir, which people used to take, and then we lost our way. While we were in that state, suddenly a Bedouin appeared before us as if he had sprung out of the ground in front of us. He said to me: O elder, do you know where you are? I said: No. He said: You are at al-Dhawa'ib. This white mound that you see is the bones of Bakr bin Wa'il and Taghlib, and this is the grave of Kulayb, the brother of Muhalhil. Then he said to me: Would you be interested in a man who had the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such companionship that you can hear (hadith) from him? I said: Yes. So he took me to a leather tent, and there was a man whose eyebrows were bound up with a band. I asked: Who is this? He said: This is Sayyiduna al-Adda' bin Khalid bin Amr bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), who in the Jahiliyyah was 'the horseman of al-Dahyah'. I said to him: May Allah have mercy on you, narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up as if alarmed by something, and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, you stood up as if alarmed? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of the three Dajjals." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you have told us about the one-eyed Dajjal and about the greatest of liars; who is the third Dajjal? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man who will emerge among a people, the first of whom will be doomed and the last of whom will be cut off; the curse will remain upon them perpetually, in a tribulation called 'al-Hariqah' (the Burning). He is the dusky Dajjal (al-Atlas), who will devour the servants of Allah."

Jahdam bin al-Dahhak related: I passed by 'al-Narjij' and saw an old man there. The people said: This is al-Adda' bin Khalid bin Hawdhah. He said that he had seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Describe him (peace and blessings be upon him) to me. He said that his (peace and blessings be upon him) beard was handsome, and the Arabs used to call the beard 'sabalah'.
