Shu'ayb bin Umar related: I set out for Makkah, and when I reached al-Dariyyah one of my companions said to me: Would you be interested in a man who had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? I said: Yes. He said: It is the owner of the tent pitched at such-and-such a place. I said to my companions: Let us go to him. So we went, and when we reached the owner of the tent we greeted him with salam. He returned the greeting and asked: Who are you people? We said: Some people from Basrah; we have learnt that you had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, I kept the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I sat beneath his pulpit on the day of the Farewell Hajj. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'O people, We created you from a male and a female and made you nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honoured of you with Allah is the most God-fearing of you' [al-Hujurat: 13]. So no Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a black person over a white person, nor a white person over a black person, except through taqwa (God-consciousness). O people of Quraysh, do not come to me carrying this world on your necks while the people come with the Hereafter, for on that day I will not be able to avail you anything against Allah." We asked: By what name shall we call you; what is your name? He said: I am al-Adda' bin Amr bin Amir; in the Jahiliyyah I was called 'the horseman of al-Dahya''.
