Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) from abstaining from marriage (tabattul), and had he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted it, we would have castrated ourselves."

Urwah said: The names of those who went out to the land of Abyssinia the first time, before Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions went out, are these: Uthman bin Maz'un; Uthman bin Affan, and with him was his wife Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); Abdullah bin Mas'ud; Abd al-Rahman bin Awf; Abu Hudhayfah bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah, and with him was his wife Sahlah bint Suhayl bin Amr, who bore him Muhammad bin Abi Hudhayfah in the land of Abyssinia; al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam; Mus'ab bin Umayr, the brother of Banu Abd al-Dar; Amir bin Rabi'ah; Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Asad and his wife Umm Salamah; Abu Sabrah bin Abi Ruhm, and with him was Umm Kulthum bint Suhayl bin Amr; and Suhayl bin Bayda'. Urwah said: Then these people, who had gone the first time before Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib and his companions, returned at the time when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed the surah in which it is mentioned: "By the star when it descends" [Surah al-Najm: 1]. The idolaters of Quraysh had said: If this man were to mention our gods with good, we would leave him and his companions alone, for he does not mention anyone among those of the Jews and Christians who oppose his religion with such abuse and evil as he mentions our gods. Then when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed the surah in which it is mentioned: "By the star" [Surah al-Najm: 1], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited (this verse): "Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other?" [Surah al-Najm: 19-20], at that moment Satan cast into it a mention of those very false deities and had it said: "Indeed, these are the exalted cranes (gharaniq), and indeed their intercession is to be hoped for." This was a seditious, rhymed utterance from Satan. These two phrases sank into the heart of every idolater and ran upon their tongues, and they rejoiced at it and began saying: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has returned to his former religion and the religion of his people. Then when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the end of the surah in which the star (is mentioned), he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and every Muslim and idolater who was present prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him), except al-Walid bin al-Mughirah, who was an old man; he raised some dust on his palm and prostrated upon it. Both parties were astonished at everyone joining together in prostration at the prostration of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Muslims were astonished that the idolaters prostrated without faith or certainty, for the Muslims had not heard the words that Satan had cast upon the tongues of the idolaters. And the hearts of the idolaters became at ease towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions when they heard the words that Satan had cast into the recitation of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Satan (also) told them that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had recited these words at the place of prostration, so they prostrated in veneration of their gods. Thus this report spread among the people, and Satan made it so widely known that the news reached Abyssinia. When Uthman bin Maz'un, Abdullah bin Mas'ud and those of the people of Makkah who were with them (in Abyssinia) heard that the people had become Muslim and had begun praying with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the news of al-Walid bin al-Mughirah's prostrating upon the dust also reached them, they set out quickly (towards Makkah). This weighed very heavily upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then when evening came, Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) complained to him (of his distress), so he ordered him (peace and blessings be upon him) to recite (the surah again), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited (the surah) to him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached those two phrases, Jibril (peace be upon him) declared himself free of them and said: I seek refuge in Allah from these two (phrases); my Lord did not reveal them, nor did your Lord command me with them. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, it was very hard upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I obeyed Satan and spoke his words, and he became my partner in the matter of Allah." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, abrogated the (words) that Satan had cast, and revealed this verse to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he wished (to recite), Satan cast (something) into his wish; then Allah abolishes what Satan casts, then Allah makes His verses firm, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise; so that He may make what Satan casts a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and those whose hearts are hardened, and indeed the wrongdoers are in extreme opposition" [Surah al-Hajj: 52]. When Allah Almighty declared him (peace and blessings be upon him) free of that seditious utterance of Satan, the idolaters turned back to their misguidance and enmity. This news also reached those Muslims who had been in the land of Abyssinia and had come near Makkah, but they could not go back because of the severe hardship that had befallen them, and the hunger and fear. They feared that if they entered Makkah they would be dealt with harshly, so not one of them entered without someone's protection. Al-Walid bin al-Mughirah gave protection to Uthman bin Maz'un. When Uthman bin Maz'un saw how much hardship had befallen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions, and that a group of them were tortured with fire and whips, while Uthman himself was safe and no harm was being done to him, he reflected within himself and preferred hardship over well-being, and said: Whoever is in the covenant of Allah, His protection and the protection of His Messenger, which Allah has chosen for His friends among the people of Islam, and whoever has entered into it, is fearful and afflicted with hardship and distress (so I too wish to be like them). So he went to al-Walid bin al-Mughirah and said: O cousin! You gave me protection and protected me in the best way, and I would like you to take me before your people and renounce your protection of me in front of them. Al-Walid said to him: Nephew! Perhaps someone has harmed you and abused you while you are under my protection, so you want the protection of someone who can protect you better than I, and I should arrange that for you? He said: No, by Allah, there is no such thing, and no one has done me any harm. When Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) refused anything except that al-Walid should renounce his protection of him, al-Walid took him to the mosque, where Quraysh were gathered in their full numbers, and the poet Labid bin Rabi'ah was reciting his poetry to them. Al-Walid took Uthman by the hand and brought him to Quraysh and said: This man has prevailed over me and compelled me to renounce my protection before him; I call you to witness that I am free of responsibility for him. So both of them (Uthman and al-Walid) sat down with the people, and Labid began reciting poetry to them. He said: "Indeed, everything other than Allah is false." Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have spoken the truth. Then Labid recited the rest of the verse: "And every blessing will inevitably vanish." Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have lied. At this the people fell silent and did not understand what Uthman meant by it. Then Labid repeated this verse again and insisted on saying it in the same way. When he said it again, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) again said the same first and last words: once he affirmed him and once he denied him. He would affirm him when he mentioned that everything perishes, and when he said: "Every blessing will vanish," he would deny him at that point (and say) that the blessing of the people of Paradise never vanishes. At this a man of Quraysh got up and slapped Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) on the eye, so that the spot turned green (bruised). Al-Walid bin al-Mughirah and his companions said: You were under a strong and secure protection, then you came out of it to reach this state, though you had no need of this harm. Then they began laughing. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Rather, I was in need of this (harm) that I have received from you, and my other eye, which was not slapped, is also in need of the like of what its companion eye received. The example of those who are dearer to me than all of you is sufficient for me. Al-Walid said to him: If you wish, I will give you protection again. He said: I have no need of your protection.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) died, his wife said: Congratulations to you on Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at her with an angry look and said: "How do you know?" She said: (He was) your (peace and blessings be upon him) horseman and companion. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I do not know what will be done with me." This statement of his (peace and blessings be upon him) about Uthman weighed very heavily on the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), since he was among the best of them. Then when Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), died, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Join our predecessor, Uthman bin Maz'un."

Sa'd bin Mas'ud al-Kindi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I feel shy that my family should see my private parts. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why? When Allah has made you a garment for them and made them a garment for you." He said: I dislike it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They see it from me, and I also see it from them." He said: But you are the Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I (indeed do so)." He said: You (do so)? Then who after you (can avoid it)? The narrator said: When Uthman turned away, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Uthman bin Maz'un is very shy and fond of covering."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The wife of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him), whose name was Khawlah bint Hakim, came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was in a dishevelled state, so she asked her: What is the matter with you? She said: My husband stands (in prayer) at night and fasts by day. Just then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned this to him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Uthman (bin Maz'un) (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Uthman! Monasticism (the rigour of renouncing the world) has not been prescribed for us. Is there not an example for you in my life? By Allah, I am the one among you who fears Allah the most and guards His limits the most."
