It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from Azd Shanu'ah called Dimam lived in Yemen, and he used to treat ailments caused by the jinn. He came to Makkah and heard people saying about Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was a sorcerer, a soothsayer and a madman. So he said (to himself): If I go to this man, perhaps Allah will cure him at my hands. So he met him and said: O Muhammad, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, grants cure at my hands, and I treat these spirits. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for Allah; we praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger." He said: Repeat this to me. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated it to him three times. He said: I have heard the words of soothsayers, sorcerers and poets, but I have never heard anything like these words, and they have reached the depths of the sea. Stretch out your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you on Islam. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his hand, and he pledged allegiance on Islam, and he also pledged allegiance on behalf of his people.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Dimam bin Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad, shall I not perform ruqyah (recite a cure) over you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for Allah; we praise Him and seek His help, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and the misdeeds of our actions. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger." Dimam said: I have read the scriptures, the Torah, the Injil and the Zabur, but I have never heard anything like these words. Repeat them to me. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated them. Then he said: Repeat them again. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated them again. Then it was mentioned that he accepted Islam.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Banu Sa'd bin Bakr sent Sayyiduna Dimam bin Tha'labah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), made his camel kneel at the door of the mosque, then tied it, then entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque. Dimam was a man with coarse hair and two braids. He came and stopped before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions, and said: Which of you is (the son of) Banu Abd al-Muttalib? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." He said: Muhammad? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: O son of Abd al-Muttalib, I am going to ask you, and I will be harsh in my questioning, so do not take it to heart. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not take it to heart; ask whatever comes to your mind." He said: I ask you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and of those who will come after you: Has Allah commanded you to command us to worship Allah, not associating anything with Him, and to abandon these rivals whom our forefathers used to worship besides Him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, yes." He said: Then I ask you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and of those who will come after you: Has Allah commanded you to command us to offer these five prayers? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, yes." Then he began to mention the obligations of Islam one by one: zakah, fasting, Hajj and the laws of Islam, adjuring him at each obligation just as he had adjured him before, until, when he had finished, he said: I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and I will fulfil these obligations and avoid what you have forbidden me, neither adding to it nor reducing. Then he went back to his camel, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the man with the two braids is truthful, he will enter Paradise."

Then he said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I will act upon this, and so will whoever of my people obeys me. Then he went back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed until his (peace and blessings be upon him) molar teeth became visible, then said: "If he is truthful, he will surely enter Paradise."
