Abu Juray al-Hujaymi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: O Messenger of Allah, we are people of the desert, and we would like you to teach us a deed by which Allah may benefit us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never belittle any good deed, even if it is that you pour from your bucket into the vessel of one asking for water, and even if it is that you speak to your brother with a cheerful face."
"And beware of letting your lower garment hang below the ankles, for that is part of arrogance, which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not love."
"And if a man reviles you with something he knows about you, do not revile him with something you know about him, for the reward of that will be yours, and its burden will fall upon him."

It is narrated from Abu Tamim that Abu Juray Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I mounted my riding camel and came to Makkah seeking him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I found him (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting. I said: As-salamu alayka ya Rasulallah (peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wa alayk (and upon you)." I said: We are desert people, there is some harshness in us; teach me something by which Allah will benefit me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah, and never belittle any good deed or kindness, and beware of letting your lower garment hang down, for that is part of arrogance, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not love the arrogant." At this a man said: O Messenger of Allah, you mentioned letting the lower garment hang down, but sometimes a man has sores on his shin, or something he is ashamed of? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm down to the middle of the shin, or down to the ankles. A man among those before you put on a cloak and strutted about in it. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, looked at him from above His Throne and was displeased with him. He commanded the earth, and it seized him, and he keeps sinking into the earth. So beware of the displeasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was sitting with his knees drawn up, wrapped in a sheet (in the posture of ihtiba), whose fringes had fallen over his feet. I said: "Which of you is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand towards himself. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I am one of the desert folk, and I have their harshness in me, so give me some advice." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never regard any good deed as insignificant, even if it is that you meet your brother with a cheerful face, and even if it is that you pour from your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water. And if a man insults you with something that is truly in you, then do not insult him with what you know about him, for its reward will be yours and its sin will be upon him. And beware of letting the lower garment hang down, for letting the lower garment hang down is part of arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And never revile anyone." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After that I never reviled anyone, not even a goat or a camel.

Abu Jurayy (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: "Alayka al-salam (upon you be peace), O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say 'Alayka al-salam'; 'Alayka al-salam' is the greeting of the dead. Say 'Al-salamu alaykum' (peace be upon you)." I said: "Are you the Messenger of Allah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the Messenger of that Allah who, when harm afflicts you and you call upon Him, removes it from you, and when you are struck by a year of drought and you call upon Him, He makes things easy for you." I said: "Give me some advice." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never revile anyone, never regard any good deed as insignificant, and speak to your brother with a cheerful face. Raise your lower garment to the middle of the shin, and if you are unwilling, then to the ankles. Beware of letting the lower garment hang down, for it is part of arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And if someone insults you with something he knows about you, then do not insult him with what you know about him, for its evil consequence will fall upon him alone."

Abu Jurayy (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to a man whose word the people would not go against. I asked: "I adjure you by Allah, who is this man?" The people said: "This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said: "Alayka al-salam (upon you be peace), O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say 'Alayka al-salam', for it is the greeting of the dead; rather say 'Al-salamu alayka' (peace be upon you)." Then the narrator mentioned a hadith similar to it.

Sayyiduna Sulaym bin Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so I had my mount brought and said: "I will certainly go to this man and hear from him." So I came to him and found him sitting with his knees drawn up in a cloak, and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) replying to a questioner: "Never regard any good deed as insignificant, even if it is that you pour the leftover water of your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water. And beware of letting the lower garment hang down, for it is part of arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And if a man insults you, or says about you something that is not in you, then do not insult him, and do not say about him something that is not in him, so that its reward will be yours and its evil consequence will be upon him. Never revile anyone." The narrator says: Ever since I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid reviling, I have not reviled anything, neither a camel, nor a goat, nor a human being.

One of the Companions narrates: I was looking for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) but could not find him, so I sat down. I saw a group of five or six men, and a man was making peace between them concerning wounds that had occurred (among them), and he settled the matter between them for some goats. Then, when the people stood up, a man said: "O Messenger of Allah!" When I heard that, I said: "Alayka al-salam (upon you be peace), O Messenger of Allah" three times, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me three times: "Alayka al-salam is the greeting of the dead."
