Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Among our houses there lived a weak, sick and emaciated man. Suddenly the tribe discovered that he was committing fornication with one of their slave-women. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Inflict his prescribed punishment (hadd) upon him." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, if we inflict the hadd upon him, we will kill him; he is very weak." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take for him a cluster of date stalks with a hundred twigs in it, then strike him with it a single time."

Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Among our houses there was an emaciated, weak man. Suddenly it became known that he was committing fornication with one of the slave-women of the household, so Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) brought his case before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give him a hundred lashes." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, he is far too weak for that; if he were given a hundred lashes he would die." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then take for him a date-palm branch with a hundred twigs in it, and strike him a single time."

Sa'id bin Amr bin Shurahbil narrates from his father, from his grandfather; he said: Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his expeditions when the time of death came to his mother in Madinah. Someone said to her: "Make a bequest." She said: "What shall I make a bequest of? The wealth is only Sa'd's wealth." So she died before Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) returned. When Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, this was mentioned to him. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Such-and-such garden is charity on her behalf," and he named a garden.
