Ziyad bin Sa'd bin Dumayrah al-Sulami relates, through Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from his father (Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him)), that Muhallim bin Jaththamah al-Laythi killed a man of the tribe of Ashja' in the early days of Islam, and this was the first case of blood-money that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) decided. The narrator said: Uyaynah bin Badr spoke about the killing of the Ashja'i because he was from the tribe of Ghatafan, and al-Aqra' bin Habis spoke in defence of Muhallim bin Jaththamah because he was from the tribe of Khindif. The narrator said: At this the voices rose, and the quarrelling and clamour increased. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uyaynah, will you not accept the blood-money?" He said: No, by Allah, not until I bring upon his women the same ruin and grief that he has brought upon my women. He said this two or three times, until a man from Banu Layth called Mukaytil stood up with a shield in his hand and said: O Messenger of Allah, for what this man did in the early days of Islam I find no likeness except sheep that came down to water: the first of them was shot, so the rest of them ran off. So make it a law today and change it tomorrow. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fifty now, and fifty more when we arrive back." And this happened on one of his journeys. Muhallim was a slender, tall, brown-complexioned man, and he was sitting at the edge of the people. The narrator said: The people kept urging him until he got up and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with tears flowing from his eyes. He said: O Messenger of Allah, the matter that reached you has indeed happened, and I repent to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, so pray for forgiveness for me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You killed him with your weapon in the early days of Islam. O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim." He said this three times in a loud voice, each time saying: "You killed him with your weapon in the early days of Islam. O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim."

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When he (Muhallim bin Jaththamah) died, his people buried him, but the earth cast him out three times. So they threw him at the foot of a mountain and piled stones over him, and wild beasts ate him. Ibn Abi al-Zinad said: It has reached me that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed that the earth had cast him out, he said: "Indeed, the earth accepts those who are worse than him, but Allah wished to show you the gravity of (unlawfully shed) blood in His sight."

Ziyad bin Sa'd bin Dumayrah al-Sulami relates from Urwah bin al-Zubayr: My father and my grandfather, who were present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Hunayn, told me; both of them said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Zuhr prayer, then sat down in the shade of a tree. Then al-Aqra' bin Habis and Uyaynah bin Badr stood up. Uyaynah bin Hisn demanded the blood of the Ashja'i, Amir bin al-Adbat (he was at that time the chief of the tribe of Qays), while al-Aqra' bin Habis was speaking on behalf of Muhallim bin Jaththamah in support of Khindif, and the two of them disputed in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "You will take fifty (camels) as blood-money on this journey, and fifty more when we return." Then he mentioned the like of the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad.

Munir bin Abdullah narrates from his father, from his grandfather, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, assign to my people that (property) upon which they accepted Islam. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) did so and appointed me over them. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) kept me in that post after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept me in it after Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to my people: There is no good in wealth whose sadaqah is not paid, so pay the zakah on honey. They asked: How much do you set? I said: One tenth. So I took one tenth from them and brought it to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he sold it and put it among the sadaqat of the Muslims.
