It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him), the mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to put his two fingers in his ears, and said: "It raises your voice more."
And that the adhan of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was (in phrases of) two and two, and his tashahhud was repeated, while his iqamah was single, and he said "The prayer has begun" (Qad qamat al-salah) only once. And in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) he used to call the adhan for Jumu'ah on Friday when the shadow was equal to a sandal strap.
And that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for the two Eids, he would take the way past the house of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), then past the people of the tents. Then he would begin with the prayer before the sermon: in the first rak'ah he said seven takbirs before the recitation, and in the second five takbirs before the recitation. Then he would address the people, then return by the other way, that is, by the way of Banu Zurayq, and slaughter his sacrificial animal at the end of the lane with his own hand with a knife. Then he would go out past the houses of Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) towards al-Balat.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go to the two Eids walking and return walking, and he would say the takbir many times during the sermon, and he would say the takbir abundantly in the sermon of the two Eids.
And when he gave a sermon in war, he gave it leaning on a bow, and in the Jumu'ah sermon he leaned on a staff. And when Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said the takbir in the adhan, he faced the qiblah, then said: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah (twice); I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah (twice). Then, facing the qiblah, he would turn to the right and say: Come to prayer (twice); then he would turn to the left and say: Come to success (twice); then, facing the qiblah, he would say: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Hafs bin Umar bin Sa'd al-Qaraz relates, through his father and his paternal uncles, that Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) was the mu'adhdhin of the people of Quba'; then Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) moved him to Madinah and made him his own mu'adhdhin. The Sunnah in the prayer of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr is that the imam says seven takbirs in the first rak'ah before the recitation, and five takbirs in the second rak'ah before the recitation.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the adhan first began in this way: a man from the Ansar was shown the adhan in a dream, and he told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to call the adhan. That Ansari taught it to him like this: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. Then he repeated: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to prayer; come to success, come to success; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is no god but Allah.

Al-Hawdi, a shaykh from the people of Madinah, narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him)), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had assigned to him the duty of the adhan.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Quba', Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would call the adhan, so that the people would know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had arrived and would gather to him. One day he came while Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was not with him, and the Zanj (black) servants began looking at one another. At that, Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) climbed up to the place of the adhan. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Sa'd, what made you call the adhan?" He said: May my father and mother be your ransom! I saw you with few people, and I did not see Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) with you, and I saw these Zanj looking at one another and looking at you, so I feared for you from them, and therefore I called the adhan. He said: "You did right, O Sa'd. Whenever you do not see Bilal with me, call the adhan." So Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan three times during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to carry it walking ahead of him (peace and blessings be upon him) and, on the occasion of the two Eids, plant it in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray facing it.
