Abu Jarwal Zuhayr bin Surad al-Jushami (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took us captive on the day of Hunayn, that is, the day of Hawazin, and began distributing the young men and the captives, I recited these verses to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, bestow your favour upon us out of your generosity, for you are the one in whom we place our hope and for whom we wait. Bestow your favour upon a people whom destiny has held back, whose unity the vicissitudes of time have scattered. Time has left us forever crying out in grief; upon their hearts lie deep sorrow and distress. If you do not come to their aid with your favours, O you who are the most forbearing of people when put to the test! Bestow your favour upon the women who nursed you, when everything you did and everything you left suited you well. Do not make us like one whose fortune has flown away; let us remain, for we are noble and honourable people. When favours are met with ingratitude, we are grateful for them, and after this day (a sense of gratitude) will remain stored with us. Clothe with pardon those whose foster-mothers' milk you drank; indeed, pardon is a well-known quality. O you who are the best of all those on whom swift steeds prance at the time of battle, when the sparks flare up! We hope for a pardon from you that we may wear, O guide of creation, when you pardon and grant help. So pardon, and may Allah also pardon that which you fear, on the Day of Resurrection when victory guides you." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard these verses, he said: "Whatever is my share and that of Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours." Quraysh said: Whatever is our share belongs to Allah and His Messenger. And the Ansar also said: Whatever is our share belongs to Allah and His Messenger.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the delegation of Hawazin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Ji'ranah, having accepted Islam, they said: We are kin and family, and there has befallen us an affliction that is not hidden from you, so bestow your favour upon us as Allah has bestowed His favour upon you. A man of Hawazin, then of Banu Sa'd bin Bakr, who was called Zuhayr and whose kunyah was Abu Surad, stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, our women are your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts and your nurses who brought you up. Had we sought refuge with al-Harith bin Abi Shimr or al-Nu'man bin al-Mundhir, and then been dealt with by him as you have dealt with us, we would have hoped for his kindness and generosity towards us, and you are the best of all who were ever brought up. Then he recited to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) verses he had composed, in which he mentioned their kinship and his (peace and blessings be upon him) upbringing: "O Messenger of Allah, bestow your favour upon us out of your generosity, for you are the one in whom we place our hope and whom we regard as our treasure (for hard times). Bestow your favour upon a people whom destiny has held back, whose unity the vicissitudes of time have scattered. War has left us forever crying out in grief; upon their hearts lie deep sorrow and distress. If you do not come to their aid with your favours, O you who are the greatest of people in forbearance when put to the test! Bestow your favour upon the women whose milk you used to drink, when your mouth would fill with the pearls of their pure milk. When you were a little child you used to stay with them, and even then everything you did and everything you left suited you well. Do not make us like one whose fortune has flown away, and by this favour of yours let us remain, for we are noble and honourable people." At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are your children and women dearer to you, or your wealth?" They said: O Messenger of Allah, you have given us a choice between our wealth and our women; rather, return to us our wealth and our women. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is my share and that of Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours. When I lead the people in the Zuhr prayer, stand up and say: We seek the intercession of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with the Muslims, and of the Muslims with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), concerning our sons and our women. Then at that time I will give to you and also ask others on your behalf." When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had led the people in the Zuhr prayer, they stood up and spoke to him as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is my share and that of Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours." The Muhajirun said: Whatever is our share belongs to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And the Ansar said the same. Al-Aqra' bin Habis said: O Messenger of Allah, as for me and Banu Tamim, we will not give. Uyaynah said the same. At this Abbas bin Mirdas said: Nor will I and Banu Sulaym give. But Banu Sulaym said the opposite: Whatever is our share belongs to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abbas said to Banu Sulaym: You have weakened me. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever of you holds on to his right in these captives will be given six young she-camels from the first spoils (fay') that come to us." So they returned their children and women to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
