Abu Jarwal Zuhayr bin Surad al-Jushami (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took us captive on the day of Hunayn, that is, the day of Hawazin, and began distributing the young men and the captives, I recited these verses to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, bestow your favour upon us out of your generosity, for you are the one in whom we place our hope and for whom we wait. Bestow your favour upon a people whom destiny has held back, whose unity the vicissitudes of time have scattered. Time has left us forever crying out in grief; upon their hearts lie deep sorrow and distress. If you do not come to their aid with your favours, O you who are the most forbearing of people when put to the test! Bestow your favour upon the women who nursed you, when everything you did and everything you left suited you well. Do not make us like one whose fortune has flown away; let us remain, for we are noble and honourable people. When favours are met with ingratitude, we are grateful for them, and after this day (a sense of gratitude) will remain stored with us. Clothe with pardon those whose foster-mothers' milk you drank; indeed, pardon is a well-known quality. O you who are the best of all those on whom swift steeds prance at the time of battle, when the sparks flare up! We hope for a pardon from you that we may wear, O guide of creation, when you pardon and grant help. So pardon, and may Allah also pardon that which you fear, on the Day of Resurrection when victory guides you." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard these verses, he said: "Whatever is my share and that of Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours." Quraysh said: Whatever is our share belongs to Allah and His Messenger. And the Ansar also said: Whatever is our share belongs to Allah and His Messenger.
