Abdullah bin Yazid relates: I heard Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Uhud, some people turned back on the way. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) split into two groups concerning them: one group said: Accept them, and the other group said: Do not accept them. Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "What is the matter with you that you have become two groups concerning the hypocrites, when Allah has turned them back because of what they earned" [Surah al-Nisa: 88].

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that, concerning the noble verse "What is the matter with you that you have become two groups concerning the hypocrites", he said: The hypocrites and the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were in a house. One group said: We wish they would come out to face us so that we could fight them, and the other group disliked that, until their voices were raised. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said to Zayd: "Write this verse down: 'What is the matter with you that you have become two groups concerning the hypocrites, when Allah has turned them back because of what they earned'" [Surah al-Nisa: 88].
