It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with me riding behind him, set out towards one of the (idols') altars, and we slaughtered a sheep for it, then cooked it in a pit (of heated stones). When it was cooked, we took it out and put it in our provision bag. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his she-camel, with me riding behind him. When we were in the upper part of Makkah, Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl met him, and each of them greeted the other with the greeting of the Days of Ignorance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What is the matter? I see that your people have come to hate you and feel aversion to you." He said: By Allah, that is not because of any hostility on my part towards them; rather, I see them in misguidance, so I went out in search of this religion. I reached the scholars of Khaybar and found that they worship Allah but also associate partners with Him. I said: By Allah, this is not the religion I am seeking. So I went on until I reached the scholars of Syria, and found that they too worship Allah and associate partners with Him. I said: By Allah, this too is not the religion I set out to seek. At that, one of the scholars of Syria said: You are asking about a religion which we know of no one practising except one person in the Arabian Peninsula. So I went on until I reached him and told him what I had set out for. He said to me: All the people you have seen are in misguidance. You are asking about the religion of Allah and His angels, and a prophet has appeared in your land, or is about to appear, so go back, affirm his truth and believe in him. So I came back, but I have not yet come to know of any prophet. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made his she-camel kneel, and the provision mat was placed before him. Zayd bin Amr asked: What is this? He was told: "This is a sheep that we slaughtered in the name of such-and-such an idol." Zayd bin Amr said: I do not eat anything that has been slaughtered in the name of other than Allah. Then we parted. He said: And Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl died before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent as a prophet, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection he will be raised as a nation by himself."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Do not touch them." I said (to myself): I will do it again so that I may see what he says. So I touched them again. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were you not forbidden from this?" (Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him) said: By the One who honoured him (peace and blessings be upon him) and sent down the Book upon him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) never touched any of them (the idols) until Allah Almighty honoured him (peace and blessings be upon him) and sent down the Book upon him.

He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off on foot with his Companions, until they entered a long lane between two walls, then reached a small door at the far end of the lane and entered a house. In the house they saw no one except one woman, and there was a large waterskin full of water. The people said: We see the waterskin but we do not see the one who carries it; ask the woman. She pointed to a velvet cloth in a corner of the house and said: Look under the cloth. The people lifted the cloth, and beneath it a person was lying. He raised his head, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "May the face be disfigured." He said: O Muhammad, why are you so harsh with me? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I have hidden something for you; tell me what it is." And he said to the Companions: "I have hidden Surah al-Dukhan for him." He said: Dukh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Be gone! What Allah willed has come to pass." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back.

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a horse in the path of Allah (for jihad); later he saw it being sold in the market, tied up with a rope and emaciated. He bargained over it, then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I had given a horse in the path of Allah, and now I have seen it being sold in the market for a small price, emaciated and tied up with a rope, and I recognise it. Shall I buy it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from buying the horse.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the time of the Fajr prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray with us today and tomorrow." So when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Qa' Namirah near al-Juhfah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed it as soon as the dawn began; and when he reached Dhu Tuwa, he delayed the prayer, until people began to say: Has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away? If only we had prayed! He (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer before the sun rose, then turned to the people and said: "What did you say?" The people said: We were saying: If only we had prayed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you done so, a punishment would have struck you." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called the questioner and said: "Its time is between these two prayers of mine."
