He is Zayd bin Harithah bin Sharahil bin Ka'b bin Abd al-Uzza bin Imri' al-Qays bin Amir bin al-Nu'man bin Amir bin Abd Wadd bin Awf bin Kinanah bin Bakr bin Awf bin Udhrah bin Zayd Allah bin Rufaydah bin Thawr bin Kalb bin Wabarah bin al-Harith bin Quda'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), and it is said that Zayd's mother was Su'ad bint Zayd, who belonged to the tribe of Tayyi'. Ibn Hisham said: Hakim bin Hizam had brought Zayd bin Harithah from Syria as a young slave boy, and his paternal aunt, Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), asked him to give Zayd to her as a gift, and at that time she was married to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So Hakim gave Zayd to her, and then she gave Zayd as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) freed him and adopted him as his son, and this was before prophethood. His father came to him while he was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "If you wish, stay with me, and if you wish, go with your father." He said: No, rather I will stay with you. So he remained with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until Allah Almighty sent him (peace and blessings be upon him) as a prophet; then he affirmed his (peace and blessings be upon him) truth, accepted Islam and prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Call them by (the names of) their fathers" [Surah al-Ahzab: 5], he said: I am Zayd bin Harithah.

Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated: Then the people pressed on until, when they reached the borders of al-Balqa', the armies of Heraclius met them. The Muslims withdrew to a village called Mu'tah, and there the two armies clashed. The Muslims arranged their ranks, appointing over their right wing a man from Banu Udhrah called Qutbah bin Qatadah, and over their left wing a man from the Ansar called Abayah bin Malik. Then the fighting broke out, and Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) fought holding the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until he was martyred among the spears of the enemy.
