Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in the lower part of his house, while I was in the upper room. Some water was spilled in the upper room, so Umm Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with her) and I got up with a velvet sheet of ours and kept following the water (to dry it), fearing that it might reach the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, full of apprehension, I went down to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, it is not proper that we should be above you; move to the upper room. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave orders concerning his belongings and they were moved, and his belongings were few. Then I said: O Messenger of Allah, you used to send food to us and I would look into it, and whenever I saw the marks of your fingers I would put my hands there, until this food came which you sent to me; I looked into it and did not see any mark of your fingers. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, there is onion in it, and I disliked eating it because of the angel who comes to me; but as for you, eat it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to them and said: "My Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, gave me the choice between seventy thousand entering Paradise with forgiveness, without reckoning, or instead a handful (granted to me) from Him." A man said: O Messenger of Allah, will your Lord give you a handful? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went inside, then came out to them saying the takbir, and said: "My Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, has given me more: with every thousand there will be seventy thousand more, and the handful with Him besides." Abu Ruhm (may Allah have mercy on him) said: O Abu Ayyub, what do you think the handful of Allah is? At this the people set upon him with their tongues, so Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Leave your companion alone. I will tell you about the handful of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as I think, rather as one who is certain: the handful of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) says: "O my Lord, whoever bears witness that there is no god but You, alone, You have no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger, and then his heart confirms his tongue, Paradise becomes obligatory for him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the soul of a believer is taken, the people of mercy among the servants of Allah receive it just as you receive a bearer of good news in this world. They say: Look at your companion, he is finding rest, for he was in severe distress. Then they ask him: What did so-and-so do? What did so-and-so (a woman) do? Did she marry? If they ask him about a man who died before him, he says: Alas! He died before me. Then they say: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return); he has been taken to his mother, Hawiyah (Hell); what an evil mother and what an evil nurse!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And your deeds are presented to your relatives and your clansmen among the people of the Hereafter. If they are good, they rejoice and are delighted, and say: O Allah, this is Your favour and Your mercy, so complete Your blessing upon him and cause him to die upon it. And when the deed of the wrongdoer is presented to them, they say: O Allah, inspire him to a righteous deed by which You will be pleased with him and bring him near to You."
