It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Purification is half of faith. Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah) fills the Scale, and Subhan Allah (glory be to Allah) and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) fill what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is light, charity is proof, patience is radiance, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you. Every person sets out in the morning bargaining with his own soul: either he frees it (from sins) or he ruins it."
(These are the words of the narration of Musa bin Isma'il, while Muslim bin Ibrahim mentioned these words in his narration: "La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) fill what is between the heaven and the earth.")

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Four things from the affairs of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) remain in my Ummah which they will not abandon: boasting about lineage, attacking people's descent, seeking rain through the stars, and wailing (over the dead). And if the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will come on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of tar and a coat of mail of the flames of the Fire." The narrator says: Upon this Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We abandoned wailing when we abandoned al-Lat and al-Uzza."

A hadith like it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except that in it he said: "And a coat of mail of scabies."
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In this narration Muslim bin Ibrahim did not mention the saying of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب الحاء / 3413
Sayyiduna al-Harith al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, commanded Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon them both) with five things: that he himself act upon them and command the Children of Israel to act upon them as well. He began to delay somewhat in this, so Isa (peace be upon him) said to him: 'You have been commanded with five things, to act upon them yourself and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them. So either you command them, or I will command them.' He said: 'Do not do that, my brother, for I fear that if you reach them before me, I will be punished or made to sink into the earth.' So he gathered the people in Bayt al-Maqdis until it was full, and he sat on a raised place, praised Allah and extolled Him, then admonished them, saying: 'Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me with five things: that I act upon them and that I command you to act upon them as well. The first of them is that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him. The example of that is a man who bought a slave with gold or silver from his own pure wealth, then said: This is my house and this is my work, so work and render your work to me. The slave kept working, but rendered his work to someone other than his master. Which of you would be pleased for his slave to be like that, working and rendering his work to someone else? Indeed Allah created you and provided for you, so worship Him and do not associate anything with Him. And He commanded you to pray, so when you pray, do not look about, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, keeps His Face directed towards the face of His servant as long as he does not look about. And He commanded you to fast, and the example of that is a man with a group of people, and he has a pouch of musk, and all of them love to smell its fragrance; and indeed the smell of the fasting person's mouth is better with Allah than the fragrance of musk. And He commanded you to give charity, and the example of that is a man whom the enemy took captive; they tied his hand to his neck and brought him forward to strike his neck, and he said: I will ransom myself from you. So he began giving little and much until he freed himself. And He commanded you to remember Allah much, and the example of the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is a man whom the enemy is seeking, rushing on his trail, until he comes to a strong fortress and secures himself in it. And the servant is most protected from Satan when he is engaged in the remembrance of Allah Almighty.'" The narrator says: And on that occasion the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And I command you with five things which Allah has commanded me: staying with the Jama'ah (the community), listening, obeying, emigration (hijrah), and jihad in the path of Allah. Whoever separates from the Jama'ah by even a handspan has thrown off the noose of Islam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever calls with the call of the Jahiliyyah is among those who fall on their knees in Hell." A man asked: O Messenger of Allah, even if he fasts and prays? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if he fasts and prays."

Then the narrator mentioned a hadith like the hadith of Musa bin Khalaf.

Sayyiduna al-Harith al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, commanded Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon them both) with five things: that he himself act upon them and command the Children of Israel to act upon them. He began to delay, so Isa (peace be upon him) said to him: 'You have been commanded with five things, to act upon them and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them. So either you command them with them, or I will stand up myself and command them.' Yahya (peace be upon him) said: 'If you go ahead of me with them, I fear that I will be punished or made to sink into the earth.' So he gathered the Children of Israel in Bayt al-Maqdis until the mosque was full and people sat on the balconies. He admonished the people, then said: 'Indeed Allah has commanded me with five things: that I act upon them and that I command you to act upon them as well. The first of them is that you do not associate anything with Allah, for whoever associates anything with Allah, his example is that of a man who bought a slave with gold or silver from his own pure wealth, then said: This is my house and this is my work, so render your work. And indeed Allah has commanded you to pray, so when you set your faces towards prayer, do not look about, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, keeps His Face directed towards the face of His servant when he stands to pray, and He does not turn His Face away from him until the servant himself turns his face away. And He commanded you to fast, and the example of the fasting person is that of a man who has a pouch of musk and is in a group of people in which no one but him has musk; all of them long to smell its fragrance. And He commanded you to give charity, and its example is that of a man whom the enemy seized and took captive; they tied his hand to his neck and brought him forward to strike his neck, and he said: Do not kill me, I will ransom myself from you with such-and-such an amount of wealth. So they released him, and he began gathering wealth for them until he had ransomed himself. Likewise is charity: through it the servant ransoms himself from the punishment of Allah. And He commanded you to remember Allah much, and the example of that is a man whom the enemy wronged; they set out swiftly in pursuit of him, and he went on until he came to a strong fortress and secured himself in it. Such is the example of Satan: the servants cannot secure themselves from him except through the remembrance of Allah.'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And I command you with five things which Allah has commanded me: the Jama'ah (the community), listening, obeying, emigration (hijrah), and jihad in the path of Allah. And whoever calls with the call of the Jahiliyyah is among those who fall on their knees in Hell." It was said: O Messenger of Allah, even if he prays and fasts? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, even if he prays and fasts. So call with the call of Allah by which He has named you: Muslims, believers, servants of Allah."
