Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards Hunayn, and we passed by a lote tree. I said: O Messenger of Allah, make this a "Dhat Anwat" for us, just as the disbelievers have a Dhat Anwat. (The disbelievers used to hang their weapons on a lote tree and sit around it in devotion.) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar! This is just as the Children of Israel said to Musa (peace be upon him): 'Make for us a god just as they have gods' [Surah al-A'raf: 138]. You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you."

Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards Hunayn, and we had only recently left disbelief. The polytheists had a lote tree near which they would sit in devotion and on which they would hang their weapons; it was called Dhat Anwat. The narrator said: We passed by that lote tree and said: O Messenger of Allah, make a Dhat Anwat for us just as they have a Dhat Anwat. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar! These are the very same ways. By the One in whose hand my soul is, you have said just as the Children of Israel said: 'Make for us a god just as they have gods.' Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, you are an ignorant people' [Surah al-A'raf: 138]. You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you."

Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we had only recently left the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). The disbelievers of Quraysh and other Arab tribes had a huge tree called Dhat Anwat. They would come to it every year, hang their weapons on it, rest beneath it, and remain around it in devotion for a day. The narrator said: As we were travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we saw a huge green lote tree, so we called out from the different sides of the road and said: O Messenger of Allah, make a Dhat Anwat for us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar! By the One in whose hand the soul of Muhammad is, you have said just as the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Make for us a god just as they have gods' [Surah al-A'raf: 138]. You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you."

Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we had only recently left disbelief; those people had accepted Islam on the day of the Conquest of Makkah. We reached a tree on which the polytheists used to hang their weapons, and near which they would sit in devotion (once) a year; it was called Dhat Anwat. We said: Make a Dhat Anwat for us as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar! You have said just as the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Make for us a god just as they have gods' [Surah al-A'raf: 138]." Then he said: "You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you."
