حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الدُّؤَلِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ وَنَحْنُ حُدَثَاءُ عَهْدٍ بِكُفْرٍ، ولِلْمُشْرِكِينَ سِدْرَةٌ يَعْكُفُونَ عِنْدَهَا، ويَنُوطُونَ بِهَا أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهَا ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ. قَالَ: فَمَرَرْنَا بِالسِّدْرَةِ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اجْعَلْ لَنَا ذَاتَ أَنْوَاطٍ كَمَا لَهُمْ ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، إِنَّهَا السُّنَنُ، قُلْتُمْ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ كَمَا قَالَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ: {اجْعَلْ لَنَا إِلَهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ} [الأعراف: ١٣٨] ، لَتَرْكَبُنَّ سَنَنَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ "
Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards Hunayn, and we had only recently left disbelief. The polytheists had a lote tree near which they would sit in devotion and on which they would hang their weapons; it was called Dhat Anwat. The narrator said: We passed by that lote tree and said: O Messenger of Allah, make a Dhat Anwat for us just as they have a Dhat Anwat. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar! These are the very same ways. By the One in whose hand my soul is, you have said just as the Children of Israel said: 'Make for us a god just as they have gods.' Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, you are an ignorant people' [Surah al-A'raf: 138]. You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you."
