Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), she said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I not perform the aqiqah for my son? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but shave his head and give in charity to the poor silver coins equal to the weight of his hair - or he said: silver." When she gave birth to Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), she did the same for him. Musa bin Dawud said in his narration: "To the homeless travellers and the poor."

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered a sacrifice, he would buy two fat, horned, black-and-white rams. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had addressed the people and led the prayer, one of them would be brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was standing at his place of prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would slaughter it with his own hand with a knife, then say: "This is on behalf of my entire Ummah, whoever has testified to Your Oneness and testified that I conveyed the message." Then the other would be brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would slaughter it himself as well, then say: "O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad." Then he would give both of them to the poor, and he and his household would eat from them.
