Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned their births in my presence, and it turned out that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was older than Abu Bakr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away at the age of sixty-three, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also passed away at the age of sixty-three, after the two and a half years that he lived after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu Ishaq said: And Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And I am now fifty-seven years old." After that he lived about twenty more years.

Al-Agharr Abu Malik said: When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to appoint Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor, he sent for him, and when he came, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am calling you to a matter that is a burden for whoever takes charge of it. So, O Umar, fear Allah by obeying Him, and obey Him through fearing Him, for the God-fearing person is secure and protected. Moreover, this matter is something that none deserves except one who acts upon it. Whoever commands the truth yet acts upon falsehood, and enjoins what is right yet does what is wrong, is about to have his hope cut off and his deeds come to nothing. So if you are made the guardian of the people's affairs, then, if you are able, keep your hand dry of their blood, your stomach empty of their wealth, and your tongue clear of their honour; do so. And there is no power except with Allah."

Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the time of death drew near for Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "O Aishah, take care of the milch she-camel whose milk we used to drink, the bowl in which we used to eat our morning meal, and the velvet cloak that we used to wear, for we made use of these things while we were responsible for the affairs of the Muslims. So when I die, return them to Umar." So when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) died, these things were sent to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with you! You have put whoever comes after you to hardship."

Nu'aym bin Namihah said: These words were in a sermon of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do you not know that morning and evening you are advancing towards an appointed term? So whoever is able to have his term come to an end while he is engaged in the work of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, let him do so; and you will attain that only with the help of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Indeed, a people devoted their terms of life to others, so Allah forbade you to be like them: 'And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves' [Surah al-Hashr: 19]. Where are those of your brothers whom you knew? They sent forward what they sent forward in their former days, and in it they met wretchedness or happiness. Where are the tyrants of old who built cities and surrounded them with walls? They have now gone beneath rocks and graves. This is the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; its wonders never come to an end, so hold fast to it; it is a lamp for the day of darkness. Seek light from its counsels and its clear teachings. Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, praised Zakariyya (peace be upon him) and the people of his household, saying: 'Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and call upon Us in hope and fear, and they were humble before Us' [Surah al-Anbiya: 90]. There is no good in a word by which the pleasure of Allah is not sought; there is no good in wealth that is not spent in the way of Allah; there is no good in a person whose ignorance overcomes his forbearance; and there is no good in a person who, in the matter of Allah, fears the blame of a blamer."
