It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Madinah and slept in the mosque, placing his cloak under his head. A thief came and stole it. He was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his hand be cut off. He said: O Messenger of Allah, it is his (I have given it to him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not say this before you brought him to me?"
