Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7296 — Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah was sleeping

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sleeping in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and under his head was his cloak. A man came and pulled it out from under his head while he was asleep. Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) chased him, caught him and brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) what he had done. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his hand be cut off. Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): The matter of this cloak of mine is not such that a hand should be cut off for it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not say this to me before you brought him to me?"
