Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf al-Ansari relates that Amir bin Rabi'ah al-Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sahl (bin Hunayf, may Allah be pleased with him) while he was bathing at al-Kharrar, and he said: By Allah! I have never seen anything like what I have seen today, nor even the skin of a secluded maiden. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) collapsed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was called, and it was said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you come to Sahl bin Hunayf? By Allah! He cannot even raise his head. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you suspect anyone concerning him?" The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, Amir bin Rabi'ah passed by him while he was bathing, and he said: By Allah! I have never ever seen anything like what I have seen today, nor even the skin of a secluded maiden. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Amir bin Rabi'ah and, expressing his anger with him, said: "Why would one of you kill his brother? If you do not pray for blessing, then at least wash yourself for him." So Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) washed for him, and Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) set off with the caravan. Ibn Shihab said: "The washing that we found our scholars performing is this: a bowl of water is brought to the man who struck his companion with the evil eye, and it is held up for him, raised above the ground. The one who gave the evil eye puts his right hand into the water and pours water once over his face, (which falls) into the bowl; then he puts his left hand into the water and washes his right hand once into the bowl; then he puts in his right hand and washes his left hand once up to the elbows; then he puts both hands into the water and washes his chest once into the bowl; then he puts in his left hand, scoops out water and pours it once into the bowl over the back of his right palm; then he puts in his left hand and pours it once into the bowl over the elbow of his right arm, and this water runs from his hand up to his neck; then he does the same with the elbow of his left arm; then he does the same on the top of his right foot from the roots of the toes, and likewise with the left foot; then he puts in his left hand and pours it over the back of his right knee, then he does the same with the left knee; then he dips the inner right edge of his lower garment (into the bowl); then the one holding the bowl stands up and pours it over the back of the right knee; then the one holding the bowl stands up and pours it over the head of the person struck by the evil eye from behind him; then he turns the bowl upside down on the ground behind him."
