Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16671 — I came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he ﷺ looked

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin Nadlah al-Jushami (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked me up and down and said: "Are you an owner of camels or an owner of sheep?" I said: Of every kind Allah has given me, abundant and fine. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do you have them born with their eyes and ears complete, then cut the ears of some and say: Sarma'" - then Sufyan said a word which I did not understand - "and say: This is a bahirah of Allah? Yet the forearm of Allah is stronger and the blade of Allah is sharper, and had He wished to give it to you born with cropped ears, He would have done so."
I said: To what do you call? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To Allah and to (upholding) the ties of kinship." I said: A man from my paternal cousins comes to me and I swear that I will not give him anything, then (regretting it) I give him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then make expiation for your oath and do what is better. Tell me, if you had two slaves, one of whom obeys you, does not betray you and does not lie to you, and the other betrays you and lies to you, is the one who obeys you and does not lie to you dearer to you, or the one who betrays you and lies to you?" I said: No, rather the one who does not betray me, does not lie to me and speaks the truth to me is dearer to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So are you all with your Lord."
