Al-Ala' bin Ziyad and Jabir bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on them both), the brother of Mutarrif, and two other men whose names Hammam did not remember, all narrate that Mutarrif (may Allah have mercy on him) told them that Sayyiduna Iyad bin Himar (may Allah be pleased with him) told him that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say in his sermon: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me to teach you what you do not know, of what He has taught me this day of mine. Indeed, all wealth that I have granted My servant is lawful. I created all My servants upright (turning away from falsehood, upon the truth), then the devils came to them again and again and led them astray from their religion, and made unlawful for them what I had made lawful for them, and commanded them to associate with Me that for which I sent down no authority. And indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, looked at the people of the earth and was displeased with them, Arabs and non-Arabs alike, except a few remaining people of the People of the Book. Then He said: O Muhammad! I have sent you to test you and to test others through you, and I have sent down to you a Book that water cannot wash away, which you recite awake and asleep (in every state). And indeed Allah revealed to me that I should fight Quraysh, so I said: O my Lord! Then they will smash my head and flatten it like a piece of bread. Allah said: Drive them out as they drove you out, and fight them, and We will soon grant you victory; spend, and it will be spent on you; send an army, and We will send five times its like; and with those who obey you, fight those who disobey you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of Paradise are of three kinds: a just and successful ruler; a soft-hearted, merciful man who is gentle with every relative and every Muslim; and a chaste, poor man who gives in charity." And he said: "The people of the Fire are of five kinds: a man whose greed can never be hidden, even for a trifling thing; a man who, morning and evening, does nothing but deceive you regarding your family and your wealth; and a weak man who has no restraint, meaning those among you who are mere followers, seeking neither family nor wealth." A man asked: O Abu Abdullah! Are they from the mawali (clients) or from the Arabs? He replied: He is the follower (hanger-on) who stays with a man and then violates his sanctity (the women of his household) through fornication, without marriage. "And the foul-mouthed, obscene man." The narrator said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also mentioned lying and miserliness.
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: These are the words of Abu Muslim's narration.
