Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt Sayyidah Maymunah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said (to myself): I will certainly memorise the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), how he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) performs it. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) came from the mosque, went to a corner of the house and relieved himself, then came to the waterskin, undid its tie and washed his face and hands. Then he lay down on his bed and remained lying for as long as Allah willed. Then he got up and went to the corner of the house, then came to the waterskin, undid its tie, and then performed an ablution between the two ablutions (a moderate one); he did not pour out much water, yet he completed the ablution. Then he came to the mosque. He said: I too did just as he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) had done, then I came and stood on his left side ((peace and blessings be upon him)), so he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) took my hand, drew me around from behind me and made me stand on his right side. He prayed eight rak'ahs and prayed three rak'ahs of witr, then prayed two more rak'ahs, and then said: "O Allah, place light in my heart, place light in my hearing, place light in my sight, place light in my hair, place light in my skin, place light in my flesh, place light in my blood, place light in front of me, place light behind me, place light on my right, place light on my left, place light beneath me, place light above me. O Allah, grant me light, make light for me, and make light great for me."
