It is narrated from Amr bin Murrah that al-Hakam bin Abi al-As sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to enter his presence. He (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised his voice and said: "Permit him to enter. May Allah curse him and all who come from his loins, except the believers among them, and how few they will be! These people will be extravagant and indulgent in this world and abased and lowly in the Hereafter; they will be people of scheming and deceit. They will be granted wealth and goods in this world, but in the Hereafter they will have no good and no share."
Musnad Abi Ya'la: 4454. Its chain contains a narrator named Abu al-Hasan al-Jazari, who is majhul (unknown), and for this reason the narration is da'if (weak).

It is narrated from Abu Yahya (may Allah have mercy on him): I was between Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both), and Marwan bin al-Hakam was abusing Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), while Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was restraining Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) (from replying). Meanwhile Marwan became angry and said: "You are an accursed household." On hearing this, Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) became enraged and said: "Did you say 'an accursed household'? Then by Allah! Allah Almighty cursed you while you were still in your father's loins."
Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh narrated it in his Musnad, and Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated it through Ibrahim bin al-Hajjaj from Hammad bin Salamah with the same chain.

And again by Allah! Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, certainly cursed you on the blessed tongue of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while you were in the loins of (your father) al-Hakam." On hearing this, Marwan fell silent.
Imam Ishaq narrated this narration through Jarir from Ata bin al-Sa'ib, and he from Abu Yahya; and Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated it through the chain of Abu Ma'mar and Jarir.

It is narrated from Umayr bin Ishaq that Marwan (bin al-Hakam) was governor over us for several years, and every Friday on the pulpit he would revile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Marwan was dismissed and Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed governor for several years, and he did not revile him. Then Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) was dismissed and Marwan was made governor again, and he again began to insult Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). It was said to Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Do you not hear all that Marwan is saying? And do you not give him any reply?" He used to come on Friday, enter the blessed chamber of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and stay there; then, when the sermon was over, he would come out into the mosque and offer the prayer, and then return to his family. Marwan was not satisfied with this silence of his, until he sent a messenger to his house. We were sitting with Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was told: "So-and-so is at the door." He gave him permission to enter. He came in and said: "I have come to you from a man of authority (Marwan), and I have brought a firm message." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Speak." He said: "Marwan has said such-and-such indecent things about Ali, and such-and-such things about you as well, and he has said: I have found your likeness to be only that of a mule which, when asked, 'Who is your father?', says, 'My mother is a mare.'"
Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go back to him and say to him: By Allah! I do not wish to wipe away anything you have said by abusing you as you did. Rather, the appointment for settling accounts between me and you is in the court of Allah. If you are truthful in what you said, Allah will reward you for your truthfulness; and if you are lying, then the vengeance of Allah Almighty is most severe. Allah Almighty has granted my grandfather (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) far too much honour and rank for my likeness to be that of a mule." Then that messenger went out, and on the way, in the blessed chamber, he met Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), who asked him the reason for his coming. He said: "I was sent with a message, and I have delivered it." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said (sternly): "By Allah! You will certainly tell me about this message, or else I will order that you be beaten so much that it will not even be known when your beating will end." When Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this situation, he said: "Let him go." Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I cannot let him go." He asked: "Why?" He said: "I have sworn an oath (that he will tell me before going)." Then that man said: "Marwan has said such-and-such things about Sayyiduna Ali and such things about you, and he has likened you to a mule which, when asked who its father is, says that its mother is a mare." On hearing this, Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said (expressing intense anger): "Woe to your mother if you do not convey to him this reply of mine: (These indecent words) are more fitting for you, for your father and for your people. And the sign of truth between me and you is that your two shoulders carry the burden of that curse of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (which he, peace and blessings be upon him, pronounced concerning Marwan's father or his family)."

It is narrated from Umayr bin Ishaq that he mentioned something with the same meaning as the previous narration.
And in his narration he related these words: "Allah Almighty has certainly granted my grandfather (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) far too much honour and dignity for his likeness to be given as that of a mule." The narrator said: Then the messenger set off, and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) met him coming towards him. It was a trait of his (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he resolved upon something, he would not deviate from it in the slightest. The narrator related that Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, I have sworn an oath (in this matter)." Then Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to the messenger): "Tell him, for when al-Husayn insists on something, he insists on it completely."
The narrator said: This saying of Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) weighed extremely heavily on Marwan, that is, his words: "Hold your two shoulders," to the end of the hadith.

This narration is mursal, because Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) is a Successor (tabi'i) and he narrated it directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Moreover, its chain contains a narrator named Mujalid bin Sa'id, who according to the hadith scholars is da'if (weak) and makes many mistakes.

It is narrated from Abu al-Aliyah (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) was governor of Sham, the Muslims went on a campaign in which they remained safe and also obtained spoils. Among their spoils was a very fine and precious slave girl, who fell to the share of a Muslim man, but Yazid sent for him and took the slave girl from him by force. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) was in Sham in those days, so that man sought the help of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) against this action of Yazid. He went with him and, addressing Yazid, said: "Return his slave girl to him." Yazid hesitated three times in complying, so Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Listen! By Allah! If you do this, then (remember that) I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Indeed, the first to change my Sunnah will be a man of Banu Umayyah.'" Then he turned and walked away, and Yazid hurried after him and said: "I ask you by Allah Almighty: am I that man?" He replied: "Allahumma la" (O Allah, no; you are not he). And Yazid returned the slave girl to that man.
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad (hadith: 4462), and the hadith scholar Nasir al-Din al-Albani declared it sahih (authentic) in Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah (hadith: 1749).

It is narrated from Abu Muslim: "Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the land of Sham during the governorship of Yazid bin Abi Sufyan. During that time the Muslims carried out a military campaign and obtained spoils, and among those spoils they also got a very fine and precious slave girl, who (at the distribution) fell to the share of a Muslim man." Then the narrator mentioned the rest of the whole hadith in the same way.
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it in his Musnad, and all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). This narration has been presented in support and confirmation of the previous text.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw in a dream as if Banu al-Hakam were leaping about on his (peace and blessings be upon him) pulpit. When morning came, signs of strong displeasure and anger were evident on his (peace and blessings be upon him) radiant face, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with me that I saw Banu al-Hakam leaping on my pulpit as monkeys leap?" The narrator related that after this incident he (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen laughing (openly) until his death.
Imam al-Hakim narrated this hadith in al-Mustadrak and declared it sahih al-isnad (authentic in chain), while other imams have criticised the memory of some of its narrators.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When Banu Abi al-As (in number) reach thirty, the religion of Allah will be made a means of deceit and corruption, the wealth of Allah will be made personal wealth circulating (among particular groups instead of the public), and the servants of Allah will be made their slaves and chattels (instead of subjects)."
Imam al-Hakim recorded this narration in al-Mustadrak and declared it sahih al-isnad (authentic in chain), while other hadith scholars have criticised its chain; however, other hadith about the trials (fitan), which point to future political and social corruption, also support its meaning.

All its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), but this narration is munqati' (broken in its chain). Also, in the narration of Imam al-Harith and Abu Ya'la these words are additional: "That man will be called Yazid."
