It is narrated from Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that on the day of the Battle of Badr, Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt was brought as a captive. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on seeing him, said: "I will certainly kill you." He said (in astonishment): "Will you kill me (alone) out of all of Quraysh?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and said (explaining the reason): "This man came to me and trampled my neck under his foot while I was in prostration; by Allah, he did not lift his foot until I thought that both my eyes would burst out (from the force of the pressure). And he brought the entrails of a camel (sala jazur) and threw them on me, until Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came and removed them from my head." The narrator says: Then an order was given concerning him, and he was killed.
Imam al-Harith recorded this narration in his Musnad under the account of those killed at the Battle of Badr.

It is narrated from Imam Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him): "The two sons of Afra' (Sayyiduna Mu'adh and Sayyiduna Mu'awwidh, may Allah be pleased with them both) struck him (that is, Abu Jahl), and then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him and finished him off."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic); Imam Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih (3962) and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal in his Musnad (20412).
