It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a group of the Companions came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) walked with them until he reached Baqi' al-Gharqad on a moonlit night. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Set off in the name of Allah; O Allah, help them." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to his house. The Companions went on until they reached the fortress of Ka'b bin al-Ashraf, and Abu Na'ilah (may Allah be pleased with him) called out to him. He came down to him, although he had only recently married. His wife said to him: "You are in a state of war, and a warrior does not come down at such an hour." He replied: "This is only Abu Na'ilah; by Allah, if he found me asleep he would not wake me." His wife said: "By Allah, I sense evil in his voice." Ka'b said: "If a young man is called even to be stabbed with a spear, he answers." So he came down to them, and they talked for a while. Then the Companions said: "Why don't we walk to Shi'b al-Ajuz (the old woman's pass) and talk there for the whole night, for it has been a long time since we went there." He said: "Very well." So they set off. Then Abu Na'ilah (may Allah be pleased with him) put his hand into the hair of his head and said: "I have never seen such a fine fragrance as tonight." Then they walked for a while, and he did the same again, until he (Ka'b) felt at ease. Then he put his hand into the hair of his head, seized it, and called out: "Strike the enemy of Allah!" The narrator says: At this their swords rained down upon him. The enemy of Allah let out such a loud scream that there was not a fortress left on which a fire was not lit. During this, Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded. Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I saw that the swords were having no effect, I remembered the dagger (mighwal) in my sword. I took it, placed it on the lower part of his belly and put my whole weight on it until it reached his bladder, and he fell. Then we left and passed by way of Banu Umayyah, then Banu Qurayzah, then Bu'ath; then we travelled by night through the rocky tract (harrah) of al-Urayd. Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) fell behind and had lost a great deal of blood, so we stopped for him; then we carried him until, in the last part of the night, we reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, and we informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of the killing of the enemy of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to al-Harith's wound. Then we took him to his house, and the people went off to their dwellings. When morning came, the Jews were frightened because of what had happened to the enemy of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whichever man of the Jews you find, kill him." At this Sayyiduna Muhayyisah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) attacked a Jewish merchant named Ibn Sunaynah, who traded and mixed with them, and killed him. Seeing this, his elder brother Huwayyisah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who was still a polytheist at that time, began beating him and saying: "O enemy of Allah! Have you killed him? By Allah, much of the fat in your belly has come from his wealth." Muhayyisah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "By Allah, I was ordered to kill him by one (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) who, had he ordered me to kill you, I would have struck off your neck too." Huwayyisah asked: "By Allah! Would you really have killed me if Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered you to kill me?" He said: "Yes, by Allah!" Huwayyisah said: "By Allah, a religion that has brought you to this point is truly an amazing religion." So these words of his brother became the first cause of Huwayyisah's (may Allah be pleased with him) acceptance of Islam, and Muhayyisah (may Allah be pleased with him) also composed some verses about it.
This chain is hasan (good) and connected (muttasil). Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from it only up to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) words 'O Allah, help them', and that part alone is marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) and mawsul (connected), while the rest of the story is mudraj (inserted). It has a supporting report (shahid) in the Sahih in the hadith of Amr from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) also narrated, through Sufyan, al-Absi and Ikrimah, that Ka'b's wife said: "I hear a voice from which I can smell blood?" Ka'b said: "This is only my brother Abu Na'ilah; if he found me asleep he would not wake me; and when a noble man is called even to an exchange of spear thrusts, he answers." And the names of those who came with Abu Na'ilah (may Allah be pleased with him) are: Muhammad bin Maslamah, Abbad bin Bishr, al-Harith bin Mu'adh and Abu Abs bin Jabr (may Allah be pleased with them).
