بَابُ فَضْلِ عبد الرحمن بن عوف رضي اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، ثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ عُقْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا - وَكَانَتْ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الْأُوَلِ - قَالَتْ : غُشِيَ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ غَشْيَةً حَتَّى ظَنُّوا أَنَّهُ فَاضَتْ نَفْسُهُ ، فَخَرَجَتْ أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا - إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ تَسْتَعِينُ بِمَا أُمِرَتْ بِهِ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ، فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ قَالَ : أَغُشِيَ عَلَيَّ ؟ قَالُوا : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : صَدَقْتُمْ ، إِنَّهُ جَاءَنِي مَلَكَانِ فَقَالَا : انْطَلِقْ نُحَاكِمْكَ إِلَى الْعَزِيزِ الْأَمِينِ ، فَقَالَ مَلَكٌ آخَرُ : أَرْجِعَنَاهُ ، فَإِنَّ هَذَا مِمَّنْ كُتِبَتْ لَهُ السَّعَادَةُ وَهُمْ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِهِمْ ، وَسَيُمَتَّعُ بِهِ بَنُوهُ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى ، فَعَاشَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ شَهْرًا ثُمَّ مَاتَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .
وَقَالَ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ : قَالَ رَجُلَانِ مَلَكَانِ كَانُوا يَأْتُونَ فِي صُورَةِ الرِّجَالِ ، قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ مَلَكًا لَجَعَلْنَاهُ رَجُلا .. أَيْ : فِي صُورَةِ رَجُلٍ .
وَقَالَ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ : قَالَ رَجُلَانِ مَلَكَانِ كَانُوا يَأْتُونَ فِي صُورَةِ الرِّجَالِ ، قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ مَلَكًا لَجَعَلْنَاهُ رَجُلا .. أَيْ : فِي صُورَةِ رَجُلٍ .
Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman narrates from his mother, Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with her) (who was among the earliest women emigrants), that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) fell into such a severe swoon that the people thought his soul had departed. So Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her) went out to the mosque to seek Allah's help through patience and prayer, as has been commanded (in the Qur'an). Then, when he regained consciousness, he asked: "Did I faint?" The people said: Yes. He said: "You have spoken the truth. (While I was unconscious) two angels came to me and said: Come, let us take your case before the One who is the Mighty, the Trustworthy. Then another angel said: Take him back, for he is among those fortunate people for whom happiness was written while they were in their mothers' wombs, and his children will yet benefit from him for as long as Allah wills." So he lived for a month after this incident and then passed away.
Abu Usamah said that the two men here means the angels who came in human form, as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And had We made him an angel, We would have made him a man" [Surah al-An'am: 9], that is: in human form.

وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَنَا أَبُو الْمُعَلَّى الْجَزَرِيُّ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا - قَالَ : إِنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِ الشُّورَى : هَلْ لَكُمْ أَنْ أَخْتَارَ لَكُمْ وَانْقَضَى مِنْهَا ؟ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : نَعَمْ ، أَنَا أَوَّلُ مَنْ رَضِيَ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : أَنْتَ أَمِينٌ فِي أَهْلِ السَّمَاوَاتِ ، أَمِينٌ فِي أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ .
( 171 ) وَحَدِيثُ : " إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ أَلْبَسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ " تَقَدَّمَ فِي اللِّبَاسِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the members of the Shura: "Are you willing for me to choose (the caliph) for you while I myself withdraw from this matter (the nomination for the caliphate)?" At this Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, I am the first to agree to this proposal, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'You are trustworthy (amin) among the inhabitants of the heavens, and trustworthy among the inhabitants of the earth.'"

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ ، هُوَ ابْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَرَأَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيِّنُ الصَّوْتِ ، لَيِّنُ الْقِرَاءَةِ ، فَمَا بَقِيَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ إِلَّا فَاضَتْ عَيْنُهُ غَيْرَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ فَاضَتْ عَيْنُهُ فَقَدْ فَاضَ قَلْبُهُ .
It is narrated from al-Hadrami (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man recited the Qur'an in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a very soft voice and a moving tone, and there remained no one among those present whose eyes did not overflow with tears (from emotion) except Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). At this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the eyes of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf have not overflowed, then surely his heart has overflowed (with the fear of Allah and tenderness)."
Takhrij and grading: Musaddad bin Musarhad recorded this narration in his Musnad. This narration is mursal, because al-Hadrami (may Allah have mercy on him) is a Successor and did not report having witnessed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) directly.

وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ ، ثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، ثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ ، ثَنَا نَفَرٌ مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا - فَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَمْ يَمُتْ نَبِيٌّ قَطُّ حَتَّى يَؤُمَّهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ .
يَعْنِي : فِي قِصَّةِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No prophet ever dies until a man from his own Ummah has led him (in prayer)."
This refers to the incident of the imamate of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed behind him.
