It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Faltan bin Asim al-Jarmi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque when suddenly his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed gaze became fixed on a man walking in the mosque. That man called out: "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah!" and whenever he spoke to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he would only say: "O Messenger of Allah!" The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you read the Torah?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked again: "And the Injil (Gospel) too?" He replied: "Yes, and the Qur'an too; by the One in whose hand is my soul, if I wished, I could recite it as well." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) adjured him (by the truth) and asked: "Do you find me written as a prophet in the Torah and the Injil?" He said: "I will tell you how the matter stands: we find (in our books) attributes like yours, a bearing like yours and the signs of the place of your emergence. We had hoped that this prophet would be from among us, but when you emerged we feared that you might be that prophet; then, when we looked, (in our view) you were not he." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I am indeed he (the promised Prophet), and they (who are mentioned in the books) are my Ummah, and their number will exceed seventy thousand and seventy thousand (that is, they will be countless)."
The chain of this hadith is hasan (good); Imam Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad (16162) and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (825).

* صَحِيحٌ مَوْقُوفٌ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the city of Nahawand was conquered, some Jewish captives fell into the hands of the Muslims. Meanwhile, the Ra's al-Jalut (the chief leader of the Jews) came there and met the Jewish captives. A very beautiful, fair-faced slave girl had fallen to the share of one of the Muslims, and he said to me: "Will you come with me to this man (the Ra's al-Jalut)? Perhaps he will give me a good price for this slave girl." So I went with him, and we came to a very arrogant old man who had an interpreter. That old man said to a man who was with him: "Ask this slave girl whether this Arab has had relations with her." Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw that jealousy had arisen in the heart of that (old man) because of the slave girl's beauty. Then he spoke something to her in his own particular language, which I understood, and I said to him: "You have committed a sin according to the rulings found in your own book (the Torah), in that you are asking this slave girl about her hidden, private matters." He said to me: "You have lied; what do you know of what is written in my book?" I replied: "I know your book better than you do." He asked in astonishment: "Do you know my book better than I do?" I said: "Yes, I have more knowledge of your book than you do." He asked (the people): "Who is this?" The people told him: "This is Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him)." That day I came back from him. Afterwards he sent a messenger to me saying: "You must come to me," and he also sent a mount for me. So I went to him seeking the reward (of Allah), hoping that he might accept Islam. He kept me with him for three days; I kept reciting the Torah to him, and he kept weeping as he listened. I said to him: "By Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) is certainly the very Prophet whom you find mentioned in your book." He said to me: "If I believe, then what will I do about the Jews (that is, what of their reproach and taunts)?" I said: "The Jews will not be of the slightest use to you in saving you from the punishment of Allah." But he refused to accept Islam, and his wretchedness overcame him.
It is sahih (authentic) and mawquf (stopping at the Companion).
