Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3857 — The ancients acknowledging the signs

It is narrated from Ikrimah bin Khalid (may Allah have mercy on him) that in the early period of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) mission, some people of Quraysh set out on a sea voyage, and fierce winds cast them onto one of the islands of the sea. There they met a man who asked: "Who are you?" They replied: "We are people belonging to Quraysh." He asked: "And what is Quraysh?" They answered: "We are the dwellers of the Sanctuary (Haram) and holders of such-and-such honours." When he came to know the truth, he said: "It was we who were its real people, not you." In fact, that man belonged to the ancient tribe of Jurhum. Then he asked: "Do you know why the place Ajyad in Makkah was named Ajyad?" Then he himself explained: "Our fine-bred horses used to gather there in great numbers, and it was called Ajyad after them." The narrator said: Those people mentioned to that man: "A man has appeared among us who claims that he is a prophet of Allah," and they described his (peace and blessings be upon him) whole affair to him. He advised them, saying: "Follow him and obey him; and were it not for this present condition of mine and my constraint, I too would have gone with you and presented myself before him."
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated this report in his Musnad (Bughyat al-Bahith: 900). All its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); however, Ikrimah bin Khalid is a Successor, so this statement takes the ruling of a mursal report.
