It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the city of Nahawand was conquered, some Jewish captives fell into the hands of the Muslims. Meanwhile, the Ra's al-Jalut (the chief leader of the Jews) came there and met the Jewish captives. A very beautiful, fair-faced slave girl had fallen to the share of one of the Muslims, and he said to me: "Will you come with me to this man (the Ra's al-Jalut)? Perhaps he will give me a good price for this slave girl." So I went with him, and we came to a very arrogant old man who had an interpreter. That old man said to a man who was with him: "Ask this slave girl whether this Arab has had relations with her." Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw that jealousy had arisen in the heart of that (old man) because of the slave girl's beauty. Then he spoke something to her in his own particular language, which I understood, and I said to him: "You have committed a sin according to the rulings found in your own book (the Torah), in that you are asking this slave girl about her hidden, private matters." He said to me: "You have lied; what do you know of what is written in my book?" I replied: "I know your book better than you do." He asked in astonishment: "Do you know my book better than I do?" I said: "Yes, I have more knowledge of your book than you do." He asked (the people): "Who is this?" The people told him: "This is Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him)." That day I came back from him. Afterwards he sent a messenger to me saying: "You must come to me," and he also sent a mount for me. So I went to him seeking the reward (of Allah), hoping that he might accept Islam. He kept me with him for three days; I kept reciting the Torah to him, and he kept weeping as he listened. I said to him: "By Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) is certainly the very Prophet whom you find mentioned in your book." He said to me: "If I believe, then what will I do about the Jews (that is, what of their reproach and taunts)?" I said: "The Jews will not be of the slightest use to you in saving you from the punishment of Allah." But he refused to accept Islam, and his wretchedness overcame him.
It is sahih (authentic) and mawquf (stopping at the Companion).
