It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) treated him hospitably and said to him: "Come to us." Then when he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to him: "Ask for what you need." He said: I want a she-camel to ride and some goats for my family to milk. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing his Companions): "Were you unable to be like that old woman of the Children of Israel?" The Companions asked about her, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Musa (peace be upon him) set out from Egypt with the Children of Israel, they lost their way. He asked: 'What is the matter?' Their scholars said: 'At the time of his death, Yusuf (peace be upon him) took a firm covenant from us in the name of Allah Almighty that we would by no means leave Egypt until we moved the bones of his blessed body with us.' Musa (peace be upon him) asked: 'Who knows the location of his grave?' They said: 'An old woman of the Children of Israel knows.' He sent for her and she came, and he said to her: 'Show me the grave of Yusuf (peace be upon him).' She said: 'I will not tell you until you fulfil my demand.' He asked: 'What is your demand?' She said: 'That I be with you in Paradise.' Musa (peace be upon him) found it hard to grant her this rank, so Allah Almighty revealed to him: 'Give her what she asks.' So she took them to a lake, that is, a place where water had pooled, and said: 'Drain away its water.' They drained the water. Then she said: 'Dig here.' They dug and brought out the bones of the blessed body of Yusuf (peace be upon him). Then when they lifted them up from the ground, suddenly the road became as bright and clear for them as daylight."
Ibn Hibban declared it sahih (authentic).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu': "A man asked Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him): 'What took away your sight and bent your back?' He replied: 'As for my sight going, it is from much weeping in grief for Yusuf (peace be upon him); and the cause of my back bending is sorrow and grief for his brother Binyamin.' The narrator said: At this Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: 'O Ya'qub, are you complaining about Allah Almighty?' He replied: "I only complain of my anguish and my grief to Allah" [Surah Yusuf: 86]. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah Almighty knows the reality of what you said even better than you.' Then Jibril (peace be upon him) went away, and Ya'qub (peace be upon him) entered his house and implored his Lord: 'Ay rabbi, adhhabta basari wa hanayta zahri, fardud 'alayya rayhanatayya fa-ashummahuma shammah, thumma-sna' bi ba'da dhalika ma shi't' (O my Lord, You have taken away my sight and bent my back; so return to me my two fragrant flowers (sons), that I may smell them once to my heart's content; then after that do with me whatever You will). Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came again and said: 'O Ya'qub, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, sends you greetings of peace and says: Rejoice, for even if the two of them had died, I would have brought them back to life for you, so that I might cool your eyes with them. And Allah Almighty says to you: O Ya'qub, do you know why I took away your sight and bent your back, and why the brothers of Yusuf did what they did? The reason is that an orphan in need came to you who was fasting and very hungry, and at that time you and your family slaughtered a goat and ate it, but did not feed him. And Allah says: I do not love any kind among My creation as much as I love orphans and the needy.'"
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After this incident it became the practice of Sayyiduna Ya'qub (peace be upon him) that whenever evening came, his caller would call out: 'Whoever is fasting, let him come to the meal of Ya'qub'; and when morning came, his caller would call out: 'Whoever is not fasting, let him come to the meal of Ya'qub.'"
