صَحَّحَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ مِنْ طَرِيقِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ayyub (peace be upon him), the Prophet of Allah, remained in his affliction for eighteen years, because of which everyone near and far abandoned him, except two men from among his brothers (close friends)." (Al-Bazzar added: "They were two of his most intimate friends, who would come to visit him morning and evening.") "One of them said to his companion: 'By Allah, you know that Ayyub (peace be upon him) must have committed a sin that no one has ever committed.' His companion asked: 'What is that?' He replied: 'Eighteen years have passed and Allah Almighty has not had mercy on him (and has not healed him).' Then when the two of them went to him, that man could not restrain himself and mentioned this to Ayyub (peace be upon him). Ayyub (peace be upon him) said: 'I do not know what you are saying, except that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, knows well that it was my habit that when I passed by two men (quarrelling) and they mentioned Allah Almighty (swearing oaths), I would go back to my house and make expiation on behalf of both of them, because I disliked that Allah Almighty should be mentioned except in a matter of truth.' He (peace be upon him) used to go out (of the house) to relieve himself, and when he had finished, his wife would hold his hand and bring him (home). One day he was late, and meanwhile Allah Almighty revealed to Ayyub (peace be upon him): "Strike (the ground) with your foot; this is a cool bath and a drink" [Surah Sad: 42]. When he was late in coming, his wife, worried, turned to look for him, and she saw him coming towards her, and Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, had removed all his illness, and he was in his best condition, as he used to be in the days of his health. When his wife saw him, she (did not recognise him and) said: 'Ay barakallahu fik' (May Allah bless you)! Have you seen this Prophet of Allah who was afflicted? By Allah, when he was healthy, I never saw anyone resembling him more than you.' He (peace be upon him) said: 'I am he (Ayyub).' He (peace be upon him) had two threshing floors of grain: one of wheat and the other of barley. Allah Almighty sent two clouds; when one of them reached the threshing floor of wheat, it poured gold into it until it overflowed, and the other cloud poured silver into the threshing floor of barley until it too was filled to overflowing."
Al-Bazzar said that no one narrated it from al-Zuhri except Aqil, and no one from Aqil except Nafi'. Ibn Hibban declared it sahih (authentic) through Ibn Wahb from Nafi' bin Yazid.
