It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him): "Gather your people for me." So he gathered them, and they all presented themselves at the door. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing them): "Behold! My (true) friends and those close to me among you are only the God-fearing and pious. (So) beware lest (on the Day of Resurrection) people come bringing their (good) deeds while you come carrying the burdens of sins loaded on your backs."
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 3147, sahih.]

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every person has three close friends. One friend is he who says: Whatever you spent (in the way of Allah) is yours, and whatever you held back is not yours; this is the person's wealth. The second friend is he who says: I am with you, but when you reach the king's court (that is, the threshold of death), I will leave you alone and turn back; these are his family, dependants and servants. And the third friend is he who says: Wherever you enter and wherever you leave, I will remain with you; this is the person's deeds. (Seeing this situation) the person says: By Allah! You were the most worthless and lowly of these three friends in my eyes."
Takhrij and grading: Imam Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated this hadith in his Musnad (2162); there is some criticism of the memory of the narrator Imran al-Qattan in its chain, but there are many supporting reports for this hadith which strengthen it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard my beloved friend Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Just as grapes cannot be picked from a thorn bush, so too the wicked and disobedient cannot attain the ranks and stations of the righteous. These are two entirely separate paths, so whichever path you take, it will bring you to the travellers of that path and its (appointed) end."
Imam Ahmad bin Mani' recorded this hadith in his Musnad; the statements of the hadith scholars differ concerning its narrator Abu al-Muhajir, while the remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has built His religion upon four pillars; whoever is not patient upon them and does not act according to them will meet Allah Almighty while he is among the sinful (the disobedient). It was asked: O Abu Dharr! What are they (these four pillars)? He said: They are: 'halal Allah lillah' (to accept what Allah has made lawful for the sake of Allah alone), 'haram Allah lillah' (to accept what Allah has made unlawful for the sake of Allah alone), 'amr Allah lillah' (to entrust the command of Allah to Allah alone), and 'nahy Allah lillah' (to entrust the prohibition of Allah to Allah alone); in these matters no one is trusted except Allah. He further said that Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Just as grapes cannot be picked from thorns, in exactly the same way the wicked cannot attain the ranks and stations of the righteous and the pious."
