It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah bin Mu'attib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the ruling that "the owner of a riding animal has more right to its front part (that is, to sitting in front or steering it)."
This narration is mursal and weak, but it has other supporting reports.

It is narrated from a freed slave of Banu Hashim that Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to receive the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) "seated one of them in front of him and the other behind him." It is also narrated through another chain that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from a journey, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far and Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came out to receive him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) "seated the elder of the two behind him and seated the younger one in front of him."
Dawud bin Abi Hind narrated it in this way; however, Asim differed from him and reported this narration through Muwarriq from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him). Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah and other hadith scholars recorded it in their books.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me behind him on the rear of his she-camel at night. Then sleep began to overcome me and I began to doze, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would touch me with his blessed hand (to keep me from falling or to wake me) and say: "O you! O daughter of Huyayy! O Safiyyah!"
Ibn Numayr also narrated similarly through Yunus bin Bukayr.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned one day from Khaybar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had seated Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) on the rear part of the saddle of his mount, while Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding a separate camel. When we drew near to Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Rafi', get down from your camel and mount Safiyyah on it, for I fear that the light of dawn may spread before we enter Madinah." The narrator said: So Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) set off with her until he brought her safely into Madinah.
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith; the narrator in its chain, Fa'id bin Abd al-Rahman al-Attar, has been declared weak by the hadith scholars.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw a rider behind whom another man was running (on foot), so he said to the rider: "O so-and-so, why do you not seat this man behind you on your mount?" He replied: "Should I seat this burly fellow behind me?" Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then why do you not send him ahead to the place where you yourself want to go?" He said: "I have not done so (that is, he stays with me)." He said: "Then why do you not take in his place a slimmer and lighter servant?" He said: "I have not done so." Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(This conduct of yours is not right,) for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever has a person running behind him while he himself is riding, Allah Almighty only increases such a person in distance (from His mercy).'"
The chain of this hadith contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, a weak narrator; however, this narration is found in various books of hadith, and a servant or any person running behind a rider has been deemed disliked because it is a sign of arrogance.

Layth narrates from a man that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a man behind whom another person was running (on foot) while he himself was riding, or this matter reached him, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said (expressing displeasure at this arrogant conduct): "May Allah split his heart, may Allah cut his heart!"
In the chain of this narration, the teacher of Layth bin Abi Sulaym is unknown (unnamed), so this narration is weak in its chain.
