It is narrated from Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) (as a mursal report) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to join the groups of people (on journeys) in turn. He was present in one such caravan, and one of its men was very prominent among his companions. The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Whenever we halt anywhere, he begins to offer (voluntary) prayer, and when we travel, he begins reciting (the Qur'an)! He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Then who used to arrange the fodder for his camel (and the rest of its care)?" They said: We did! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All of you are better than him", or as he said.
(This is a good mursal report.)

Imam Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that a man used to accompany him on journeys, and he would order us to wake him (for the pre-dawn meal) and prepare his suhur meal for him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever serves twelve men in the path of Allah Almighty (in jihad or on a journey) comes out of his sins as pure as on the day his mother gave birth to him; and whoever gives a man water to drink in the path of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will come to the Pond (al-Kawthar) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Day of Resurrection."
(The narrator said:) When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) travelled (with the Companions), he would impose the duty of service on the most excellent among them, and whoever missed that opportunity, he would impose on him the duty of giving the adhan.
(The narrator further said:) A group of people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from a military expedition, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw among them some people whom (abundant) worship had exhausted and worn out. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who used to serve them?" Some of them said: O Messenger of Allah! We did. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are more excellent than them (the worshippers)."
