It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever serves twelve men in the path of Allah Almighty (in jihad or on a journey) comes out of his sins as pure as on the day his mother gave birth to him; and whoever gives a man water to drink in the path of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will come to the Pond (al-Kawthar) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Day of Resurrection."
(The narrator said:) When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) travelled (with the Companions), he would impose the duty of service on the most excellent among them, and whoever missed that opportunity, he would impose on him the duty of giving the adhan.
(The narrator further said:) A group of people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from a military expedition, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw among them some people whom (abundant) worship had exhausted and worn out. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who used to serve them?" Some of them said: O Messenger of Allah! We did. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are more excellent than them (the worshippers)."
