It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "What day is this?" We said: It is the day of sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What month is this?" We said: It is Dhu al-Hijjah, which is a sacred month. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What city is this?" We said: It is a sacred city. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, your blood, your wealth and your honour are sacred and inviolable to you, just as is the sanctity of this day of yours in this city of yours and this month of yours! Beware! Let the one who is present convey this message to the one who is absent."
A similar narration is also reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hujayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while delivering the sermon on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj, asked: "O people! What city is this?" Then the narrator mentioned other details in the same way, and added that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So do not turn back into disbelief after me, striking one another's necks."

Talib bin Salma narrates, through a member of his family, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivering the sermon on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take heed! Indeed, your wealth and your blood are sacred (and inviolable) to one another, just as is the sanctity of this city of yours on this day. Beware! Let it never be that you turn back into disbelief after me, striking one another's necks. Listen! Let the one who is present here convey this to the one who is not present." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know whether I will ever meet you at this place after today. 'Allahumma ishhad alayhim' (O Allah, be witness over them). (Then he asked the Companions:) Have I conveyed (the religion)?"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: This surah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the middle of the days of Tashriq at Mina, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the Farewell Hajj: "When the help of Allah and the victory come" (Surah al-Nasr), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the complete surah.
So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) understood that it was the message of farewell (departure from this world). He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his she-camel named al-Qaswa be brought, and when it was saddled and brought, he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for the people at the Jamrah al-Aqabah, and the people gathered around him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah Almighty with 'al-hamdu lillah' (all praise belongs to Allah) as befits the majesty of His station, then said: "O people! All the blood (vengeance) of the time of Jahiliyyah is now void and abolished, and the first blood that I abolish is the blood of Iyas bin Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, who was being nursed among Banu Layth and was killed by the tribe of Hudhayl.
And the first usury (riba) that I abolish is the usury of Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). Now you are entitled only to (the return of) your capital: 'You shall not wrong, nor shall you be wronged' [Surah al-Baqarah: 279]." After this the narrator mentioned the rest of the long hadith.

Imam Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) related that it is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: I found a writing in the hilt of the sword of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "The worst of people in rebellion and transgression is the one who strikes someone who did not strike him, and the man who kills (in retaliation) someone other than the actual killer (of his slain relative), and the man who forms a bond of allegiance with others, abandoning his true benefactors and patrons. Whoever does that has disbelieved in the commands of Allah and His Messenger, and Allah Almighty will accept from him neither an obligatory nor a voluntary deed."
And in another narration of the same kind it is reported: "The blood and wealth of all the Muslims are equal (in retaliation and blood money). Even the lowest-ranking of them may grant protection to someone, and its observance is binding on all the Muslims. No Muslim is to be killed for a disbeliever, nor is a person under covenant (mu'ahad) to be killed during the term of his covenant. The followers of two different religions do not inherit from one another. A woman is not to be married (combined in marriage) with her paternal aunt or her maternal aunt. There is no (voluntary) prayer after Asr until the sun sets. And no woman is to travel a journey of three nights without her mahram."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wabisah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr he would stand before the people to address them and say: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asking the people: "What day is this?" The people said: It is the day of sacrifice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What month is this?" They said: It is a sacred month. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What city is this?" They said: It is the (sacred) city of Makkah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, your blood, your wealth and your honour are sacred and inviolable to one another, just as is the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this city of yours, until the time when you meet your Lord. 'Allahumma hal ballaghtu?' (O Allah, have I conveyed the message?) So let the one who is present here convey it to the one who is not present."
Sayyiduna Wabisah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So we bear witness to you just as we were made witnesses (by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)). In another similar narration it is mentioned that Salim bin Wabisah led the people in prayer at al-Raqqah and, mentioning this same hadith of his father, said that Sayyiduna Wabisah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness to you just as we were made witnesses; when you are absent from here, we will be the ones conveying this message to you.
