It is narrated from Imam Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him) put the offer of marriage before his son, but he refused. Then he mentioned this to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to that young man: "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not marry? And Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) married too, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) married too, and we too have of them (wives) what we have?" At this the young man said: O Commander of the Believers, whose deeds could be like the deeds of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and whose deeds could be (as lofty) as your deeds? When he said "like your deeds", Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Enough, be quiet; now if you wish, marry, and if you wish, do not."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sa'id bin Jubayr relates that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked me, and this was at a time when the hair of a beard had not yet appeared on my face: "O Ibn Jubayr, have you married?" I said: No, and at present I have no such intention. He said: "Indeed, the trusts that have been placed (by Allah) in your loins will soon come forth (in the form of children)."
This report is sahih (authentic) in its chain as mawquf (a Companion's own statement), and part of it is also found in the books of Sahih.

It is narrated from Abu al-Bakhtari (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned various matters for which a person is rewarded, to the point that he receives a reward even for being intimate with his wife. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, how can that be, when by this act he is merely fulfilling his own desire? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you think: if he did this act in a forbidden way, would he not incur sin?" The Companions said: Yes, certainly he would. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Likewise he is rewarded (for fulfilling his desire in a lawful way)."
From this blessed hadith a great principle is derived: when a person intends, through what is lawful, to avoid what is forbidden and to remain chaste, even his natural and worldly affairs are turned into worship that earns reward.

It is narrated from Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that a few people gathered and consulted one another, saying: If we send someone to the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask about his (peace and blessings be upon him) noble character (that would be good). So they sent a messenger, and the pure wives replied that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prays (at night) and also rests, fasts and also breaks his fast, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) has also married.
On hearing this, those people (reasoned) that the status of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is such that Allah Almighty has forgiven him "whatever of your sins came before and whatever came after" [Al-Fath: 2]. At this one of them said: I will stand in prayer the whole night and never sleep; another said: I will always fast and never miss a day; and yet another said: I will leave women and not go near them, for they keep one occupied (away from worship).
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this matter, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with people who pry into the affairs of their Prophet, and when they are informed of them, they show aversion to them? One of them said such-and-such and another said such-and-such?" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), describing his own example, said: "But I sleep and I also stand (in prayer), I break my fast and I also fast, and I have married women; remember, whoever turns away from my Sunnah has nothing to do with me."
This blessed hadith makes clear that in the religion of Islam there is no room for monasticism and extremism; rather, moderation in all the affairs of life and following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are the true aim of a believer.
