It is narrated from Adi (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion from Banu Judham, that a quarrel arose between him and his two wives. In the course of it he struck one of them with a stone in anger, and she died. So he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to learn how to settle this matter, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was staying at Tabuk at that time. He asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about retaliation and blood money for the slain woman, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pay her heirs her blood money (diyah)." Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: That scene is still before my eyes, as if I am seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) riding a red she-camel of his whose ear was slightly cropped. He (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and said: "O people! Know well that hands are of three kinds: the Hand of Allah Almighty is the highest, the hand of the giver is in the middle, and the hand of the receiver is the lowest. So refrain from stretching out your hands before people and adopt chastity, even if you have to earn your provision by gathering bundles of firewood from the forest (through toil and labour)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his blessed hands and said before Allah: 'Allahumma hal ballaghtu' (O Allah! Have I conveyed (Your message)?)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Junadah (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of performing the Farewell Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks (people) without poverty, hunger or need, it is as if he is chewing glowing embers of fire."
According to the imams and commentators of hadith, this prophetic saying severely condemns stretching out one's hand to beg without need, and makes clear that wealth gathered by begging without right is in reality the fire of Hell, which will become a torment for the one who begs.
